India has the world's largest incidence of dog-mediated human rabies deaths. And yes, that includes New Delhi.
Not meaning to be a bummer, but travelers often forget that added precautions are required approaching animals in other countries

Roughly 36% of the worlds rabies deaths occur in India each year, most of those when children come into contact with infected dogs. In collaboration with key partners, Indias federal government is working with other countries to tackle the problem. Patralekha Chatterjee reports.
