Internet tells me root canal or infection can result, so why do it/crown again? Can extraction happen with the base tooth cut down like that?

(8,144 posts)is for cases in which the post has broken along with the crown. I had bad luck last years with crowns chipping or falling out. Have to be careful with them.

(17,622 posts)...with a root canal will eventually fail. Implants run about 4500$. I have had 6 and they are totally worth it. Unfortunately insurance usually wont pick up any..or not much.

(205,521 posts)And I've had no problems since. I just wouldn't do what I did, however - I wasn't thinking and my extraction was scheduled for election day 2016. I was running late and voted on the way home - with half of my face still numb so I could barely pronounce my name when I was asked. I was obviously still able to vote, but it was embarrassing...
On the other hand, if the crow is intact and the tooth isn't causing you any problems, you should be able to get it put back, but do it soon!

(3,739 posts)when a crown falls off you need to go to the dentist right away so he/she can put it back on or replace it with a new crown. If you don't have the dentist replace it promptly, an infection can happen and then you might need a root canal. I would rather have the crown replaced than have a root canal!

(1,480 posts)One broke and the other stayed whole. The broken one I had replaced, the other just reglued. Both are fine.

(62,444 posts)I had a complete and utter fly-by-night hack of a so-called "dentist" do a root canal and a crown several years ago.
Not long after he fled the area, the site became hopelessly infected.
I had the remaining bits and pieces extracted.
Every now and then I think about getting an implant, but it's really not bothering me, and it's not as if I smile all the way to my molars anyway.

Everybody knows what happened to Jack, but not many know the backstory on Jill. I don't want to gossip or anything, but the part about how she "came, tumbling after". Well, let's just say that the "tumbling after" part didn't happen.

(44,973 posts)The old one was made of some funky material. It was taken off and a new one was put on. Of course you better off asking a dentist what can be done.

Whatever you do, don't swallow one. The recommended way to find it when it eventually works its way through your digestive system is disgusting. I did that once, and just paid for them to make another crown.
I've had a bunch of crowns, having failed to duck a pitch that curved into my jaw.
Good luck. Do see a dentist as soon as possible.

(5,093 posts)the best thing you can do is go to your dentist as soon as possible. Let the dentist evaluate
your tooth, possibly X-ray and the determine the best course of action.
Most of the time you may only need to have the crown re-cemented. If you wait, it may no longer
fit as your teeth will shift. If there is decay, or if the crown is older and worn, you may may
need to replace. The dentist will decide if it can be replaced without a root canal..
It is almost always preferable to keep your teeth and cheaper too. A good dentist will always
do the least treatment necessary.

(5,093 posts)with the dentist I worked with. He was far from rich and dedicated to his patients as
is the my dentist now. There are some that will exploit patients, but my experience over
many years and many dentists are most are hard-working and care about their patients.
Hopefully, you have a dentist that you can trust. If not get a second opinion, but do
not wait. As I said, teeth shift and the tolerance is small.

(70,711 posts)1) the dds being very nice with his bedside manner, but freely telling me about his $10K trip to Machu complete with "advice" on when I should go (like I could go there), and how he is "rich enough" to only work parttime.
2) His staff of (technicians?) relentlessly calling me for months about signing up for a LIFETIME of quarterly cleanings at $100 a shot.
3) the aforesaid initial plan for $7K, with a SMILE as she requested my debit. No, I brought it down to $3,500 and waited for the basic services to be done upon which I never went back.

(5,093 posts)Find a new dentist. I do not know where you are, but everywhere I have lived I have always found
good dental care. And only accept treatment you can afford. At a time when I could not afford much dentistry.
I went to the local dental school and had all my fillings replaced
A good dental office will respect your financial imitations and work with your budget. .
There are always options, some less expensive than others. You do not have to accept the
"Cadillac" plan and if that is all they offer, walk. Find a dentist who cares about you. They
are out there.

(23,322 posts)and stay in place without issue. Your DDS should take a film to make sure there is no decay present on the prepped tooth. If the tooth is decayed, then maybe it can filled or might possibly need a root canal and require a new crown. If the tooth under the crown broke, then most likely an implant and implant supported crown is the treatment of choice. Best wishes!

The crown is good as new. An implant is, for me, *not* an option. As I've said, I prefer a one time FIX, not living the rest of my life with forever-procedures and appointments, not to mention $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

(4,557 posts)unless the root is broken off as well. I have had crowns recemented (the original crown, not a replacement) several times with good success - most were pulled off by eating sticky candy so my fault. Implants are much more durable and m/l permanent but v pricey as noted.
