(51,611 posts)I felt the same way after my baby died. I am still not over the loss. I got her as soon as I got a place that allowed dogs after being without a furbaby for 6 years during and after college. There was such an emptiness without her here. The space was not the same at all. It seemed so big and joyless and awful. My current "baby" is 16 and everyday I smother her with kisses and squeeze her and hug her so much she may be bald soon.

(63,221 posts)I don't know why, but I have such a maternal instinct when it comes to dogs. I have endless patience and am so focused on their needs, but for some reason, I just don't have that instinct when it comes to children.
I love my nieces and nephews, especially now that they are a little older (adolescents/teens) and they have some personality. But when they were babies/toddlers I really did not have much interest in them. I feel bad about that, but I guess I am just not a baby person.
