(33,643 posts)To assert that is the case would involve comparing essentially a 3-dimensional measurement (width of Australia across the surface of a sphere) with a 2-dimensional measurement (the diameter of the moon).
If Australia were plopped onto the surface of the moon, on the equator, on the side facing the Earth, I don't believe that it would span the entire visible surface of it, East to West (i.e. 1/2 of the moon).

(33,643 posts)A country on the surface of the earth (a sphere) doesn't really have a 'diameter', it's not the proper measurement. One should be comparing it to the circumference of the moon, which is 6787mi.
Australia is 2,511 miles wide, which is 36% of the moons circumference.
Ergo, if you took Australia off Earth and plopped it onto the visible side of the moon, it would not traverse the entire 1/2 of the moon that's visible to us.
At least that is how I believe one should properly compare these two bodies.
