Need some advice tonight...

So my company has been slow. I work in staffing and my boss who has been doing this for 40+ years said this is the slowest he has ever seen. So first of all, I call bullshit on this economy. But second today he said he wanted to lay me off.

It was a weird conversation. He said he hated to see me go, but my numbers are the worst right now. Plus i was the last person hired. He knows that isn't my fault because luck of the draw it just so happens my companies are the ones going on slow down. In fact one of my best companies has been laying people off. It isn't looking good. And he knows I do all of the social media/marketing that has actually been helping us.

That being said, my boss said tomorrow could be my last day or I could stick around for a few more weeks. That's weird, but ok. I have been interviewing and I have a promising lead with another company. I have already had two phone interviews with them plus an in person interview. And the main lady asked me today if I have a No compete with my current company. Which I do not.

But I have no conclusive answers from the new company. So if you were me, what would you do? I'm pretty miserable at my current company. I have been reduced to a telemarketer basically at this point. However I have insurance and unemployment pays less than my salary. But all signs at the moment point to i might get this job with the other company.

If I leave now, i get severance and a great letter of review. If I leave later who knows. So I'm super torn.
Anyone else been in this situation? What should I do? Thank you all in advance.
Oh btw I do have websites that I'm starting to work on so there is that. Ugh so torn.

1. Can you stretch it out until you hear from the new company?

I don't know if I'd tell your boss or not. Maybe say you'd like a few more days to get started on looking for another job, because it's easier to get a job if you have a job.

I can, but if I do get a new job i would have to put in two weeks and lose the severance. But I don't even know what that is at this point! He wouldn't tell me

2. My wife once got laid off, with severance, and got a new job the next day.

It was great. She bought a car with her severance.

Let him lay you off if it comes to that. You have nothing to lose. Hopefully you get a new job, and there's no need, absolutely none, to let your former boss you got it in the case where you need a letter of recommendation in the future.

9. See this is why I have been applying to new jobs

But if I don't get the job that is super promising I'm screwed because no more health insurance and unemployment pays less. Wifey and I are already struggling financially because this current job pays less than I'm worth but I took it because it was close to home. We had an elderly dog who I came home and took care of everyday but he sadly passed away. So the door is wide open for me, but if I get the job I applied to it is even closer to home. So I really don't know what to do.

But I've never been in your situation. And I'm retired! So, no recent experience either.

I'd say while you're this conflicted, don't do anything. Once you get a more definite feeling about which way to jump, then JUMP.

I've always found that listening to my gut helps me the most. My gut tells me that you should wait till you get a more definitive answer from the other company.

But you're the one making the decision. You have to live with what you decide.

Best of luck, and I mean that.

5. If you get an offer, take it, but say you are giving 3 weeks notice.

It seems like you're sure your being let go fairly soon so that 3 weeks will probably get your severance. If 2 weeks go by and you haven't been let go give 1 week notice and move on to the new job. If you don't get an offer stay at your current job and keep looking. Either way you will probably get your severance. Hopefully you'll get the offer and within the 2 weeks you will get let go anyway and get your severance.

7. Stay where you are until you get a firm commitment to another job. Then give your notice.

It doesn't sound like you have another job yet, but you have an option to stay at the current one a while longer. If that's the case, then why not keep working?

Most companies, when they hire a new employee, respect that employee's commitment to give notice, instead of jumping ship immediately.

It just seems easier to find a job when you're already working, than when you're not working.

Of course, I'm just talking off the top of my head here. Give me whatever credibility you think I'm due.

I'm getting NO severance. Seriously. I got checks for my vacation and commission which was nothing. So I'm forced to stay a week or two more and now I really hate it. Ugh.
