I bought the 8" fire tablet and use it occasionally for streaming to a chromecast on my tv. I just got an Echo Dot speaker
for half price and like it too. I am using it as a bluetooth speaker for a little laptop (sounds better than the laptop speakers) and for an alarm and timer and the sleep sounds skill. Use a fan noise or rain or waves and usually let it run all night, really helps me sleep....

And get weather updates and play bird sounds for our parrot while we’re out of the house. I ask her about measurement conversions while I’m cooking and my hands are messy...or what time the Cubs play....my 14 year old son and his friends ask her to fart. Boys...🙄

Alexa.. do record and report my questions?

Alexa... what do you think of Donald trump?

Of course, they don’t get much of an answer. Sometimes just silence

Is that Alexa can read books you have in your library to you. Why do you need audio books after that?

that you wouldn't want somebody else outside your home to hear.

I'll never have one of those spy devices in my home.

It's all being evaluated by computers. 99.9% of most of what these spy devices pick up is irrelevant or just downright boring, but they data mine whatever they can to target people with advertising. If you're immune to advertising pitches, no problem, but a big enough subset of the population is not resistant, so that's why they do it.

The problem will come when malevolent government tries to use the information to root out "undesirables". Imagine that a local police department hires a hacker to figure out how to listen to all the Alexas, etc. in a town, and looks for people speaking Spanish. They match that against a database of people here legally, then they turn the rest over to the Feds, and doors get knocked on, maybe people get deported.

George Orwell saw such a dystopian society, but even he might have figured that "Big Brother" would be imposed on people by law. He'd surely turn over in his grave if he realized that someday people would voluntarily buy and install spy devices in their homes without any government coercion.
