I was born in '47. She became queen in '52. I doubt I'll be around much when she finally croaks.
What is bringing this on is watching some YouTubes about her parents (Queen Mother was a muther), how they were the ideal parents and gave heart to the peeps during the trials of WW II, not to mention the debacle of their predecessors/a-holes Edward/David and Wallis-babe.
For me, I thought JFK and LBJ were all encompassing at the time, but their arcs are really small considering Liz II takes all my life over.
My mother had a saying, "Everything goes out of fashion - people, too!1"

(70,720 posts)I *KNOW* he's a creep, tyvm. It's that I'm getting off of a YouTube session about Edward VII, Queen Mary, Edward the Idiot/VIII and fellow despicable Nazi Wallis. So... the current gal Liz the 2 deserves a laugh (when she sees Phil wearing the bearskin) after what her parents and she did in WWII.

(5,429 posts)and the windsors do not represent an ideal family history (from Shakespeare's villians through George iii and jack the ripper) but, their princes do make themselves useful by serving in the military, unlike the entitled trumps and bushes of American dynasties.

(102,324 posts)for Americans to be "Royalists"... (ignoring extreme Trumpists for the moment). Thus, my view of THIS Elizabethan period is fascination-- as with an arc of history, some considerable respect (she's the ultimate survivalist, after all) and some small appreciation for the conflicted feelings that Brits must have for this living relic of their past and its place in the future.
I don't revere the Royals as would the idiotic celebrity-addicted (talking to you, Kardashian-obsessed, TMZ-following Americans), but how can one not be at least interested in their place in history and, it would appear, the future?

Queen Elizabeth is so long-lived and long-serving that she doesn't serve as a good barometer of monarchical duration.
So I've lived through:
Paul VI
John Paul I
John Paul II
Benedict XVI
