DU Album of the Day: "Old-Timey Concert" Doc Watson

This 1967 album has Doc playing with Clint Howard and Fred Price, just before beginning the solo portion of his career. Blind from infancy due to an eye infection, Watson found his gift in playing flat-pick guitar, and he did it in a way nobody had before. Forced to work up his ability because the band he was in didn't have a fiddle player, Watson developed a frenetic flat-pick style that stood in for the flow and punctuation of the fiddle in bluegrass/folk/hillbilly music.

Watson won or shared eight Grammy awards during his long career. One of the comments to this video is that there are two ways to play like this: 1. Sell your soul to the devil; or 2. Be Doc Watson. Doc plays it neat and clean as a hound's tooth, until the 3:04 mark, when the turbo kicks in.

I saw Doc last summer.

I thought he'd be around for years.

He was the absolute best at what he did and a genuinely nice man.
