DU Album of the Day: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II

I picked Led Zeppelin II today for a reason. Today Bonham would have been 64 years old today; however, the Gods above took him early from this world and today he plays in what is probably one of the greatest rock & roll bands ever.

To me Bonham is the greatest drummer of all time. Think about it this way, some say Keith Moon was the greatest drummer and yet after he died, The remaining members of The Who found it easy to replace him. However with Led Zeppelin, with the loss of John Bonham, felt it was best to cease producing albums that to continue on with another drum. Bonham was the heart of Led Zeppelin. 32 years later, Led Zeppelin has only reunited a few times for one-off concerts here and there. One of their main replacements for Bonham is his son Jason Bonham.

Also my favorite songs are on LZ II which include these 2:

Ramble On

Was at a house party while in Jr HS. My friend's sister was older and "supervising". She put this album on the turntable, and I just sat on the couch mesmerized. Changed my direction of music appreciation.

You're right Lynne, Bonzo was the heart and soul. Page was the brains, Plant was the voice, and Jones the legs, but Bonham drove their sound to the limit.

Reminds me of one of the best summers of my life...
Riding around on old back roads..smoking in the VW crammed with too many friends...
Listening on the eight track ....

Those were the days...

I give it a slight edge over the debut because nearly every song is a classic.

And this has always been my favorite cut. It's simple, but classic:

I was sooooooooooooo high the first time I heard this whole album. WIAWSNB will mess a stoned teenager up. We used to take the speakers and point them at each other and lie between them on the floor and me my buddy would pass a joint back and forth and listen to II for hours....loudly

I quit the weed but will never quit the Zep.

I, and all my friends found it vastly disappointing after the first album. I think "Whole Lotta Love" one of their weakest songs.

We all went to see LZ in concert the week the second album was released. They were not great, not as good as the opener Grand Funk Railroad, believe it or not. Cleveland Public Hall, October 1969. We had all bought the second album without hearing any of it, and were disappointed.

They did much better work later, but they had lost us already, and we went on to other things.
