and I don't know if every place is the same, but we had to settle up w/ the till at the end of the shift and we'd end up going home with the cash anyway.

(Just a way of saying that if you don't have the cash, don't let that prevent you from placing the order, or asking for delivery.)

Then the tip increases, of course. I would also tip more depending on how far off from the shop I am. I tell you what is really pissing me off: The techs at the clinic where I work will order pizza or Grubhub and since they can't come out themselves, they give me the $$ to give to the delivery person w/o a tip included. I feel so bad that I throw in a tip even though the food isn't for me. I told them that I was doing that for the last time--no tip, I'm not acting as the middle man.

I was getting in a cab in front of the hotel. the cab quoted $20 total. When we arrived at the destination, the couple jumped out, the man gave the cab driver $10 and scurried off. I gave him the tip.

There's not an expectation of a tip in France, but I usually tip a Euro because it's something of a maze of 1-way streets to get to my building and I order pizza often enough that I don't want the drivers to resent it.

I added a 20% tip on the web page we ordered from.

The guy who delivered the pizza was obviously a recent immigrant, didn't speak English, and literally ran away before I could give him a cash tip. I go above and beyond on tips because years ago I used to deliver pizzas and know what kind of job it is.

Delivering pizzas I think I saw it all, from guys opening the door naked to people who were partying and had to hit up everyone for money to pay me. Or offered to pay me with drugs.

I once got groped by a drunk woman who demanded exact change to the penny. I didn't have it and she said "Sure you do!" and stuck her hand down my pocket. That one I ran from.

He had lots of stories about no tips.

When I worked the information desk at the local hospital, sometimes someone (usually someone visiting a patient) would order pizza. I would always pointedly tell the person to tip the driver. And I'd tell the driver why. The drivers liked me.

I have never worked a job where I depended on tips. But I've worked with the public in most of my jobs. I believe in tipping well.

the cost is, the service, and sometimes if I have cash. I HATE it that some places have gone to not being able to tip unless you have cash. I am a good tipper so I do try to take cash when I do the drive through. I do not carry cash often and I usually have not planned for a trip to the drive through. When I tip at those drive throughs it is fun to see the shock and how happy they are to get a tip. I also do not go to those restaurants often just because it is hard to tip.

So...
0-10% for poor service
15% for standard service
20% or more for good service

But delivery

(1) charges a fixed free to begin with, and
(2) delivery and counter service isn't remotely as much work as table service, but the bills are usually equal and
(3) delivery and counter service usually get higher base pay thab table servers.

So tipping delivery 15-20% or more on top of a fixed $3-10 fee seems kinda excessive. Tipping the cashier at Chipotle also seems inflated.

Especially when table service is the reference job, and they normally get low base pay, and their normal top is 15-20%.

I don't mind tipping the delivery person, but I do mind when the delivery service gets a cut of the tip. Same for Uber and Lyft.

To cut out the online service, do folks recommend tipping only in cash so that the delivery person him/herself gets it all?

Thoughts welcome.

So I usually tip about 10% for delivery. I had a big $50 order (bought a few days worth of food because my wife is disabled and I'm suffering from some tendonitis) so I tipped $6

I always do 20% or a little more for sitdown (more if really good service or if the bill is very small. I don't want to tip only $1.20 on a $6 bill. $2 minimum).

I also tip 10% for carryout since I figure the 20% is half prep and half serving the table and i'm not being served at the table.

Also I tip $10 a day for maid service in hotels.
