The Kurils are part of the Pacific Rim Ring Of Fire. Kamchatka has some volcanic activity on a regular basis as well. A friend of mine who was stationed there as a news correspondent took a helicopter over a Kamchatka volcano as it was spitting out stuff. He came back alive, but I'm not sure how much of his good karma he blew on the adventure.
