Uphill quench is a heat-treat process done by alternately
cooling a component with liquid nitrogen then heating in boiling water.
The cycle is repeated five to seven times. The purpose is to 'acclimate'
the structure of, in this case, an aluminum focal plane that supports
supports CCDs that operate at very cold temperatures.

First you see a few SolidWorks 3D model views.
The the boiling water immersion.
Then the immersion of that hot (100 deg C) focal plane into
the cold (?196 °C) liquid nitrogen.

This makes the finished part much more stable at the operating
temperature of the instrument.
