Got some spam about Canadian rail vacations and decided to check it out...

Most of this seems to be done by tour packagers, and they make it look great:

Prices start at 10 grand US per person? Sorta steep, even for three weeks on the rails, but 500 a night everything included isn't that bad for a deluxe vacation.

I've had some spectacular European train rides. The longest was Frankfurt to Prague, but London-Edinburgh was a bit more interesting. The famous Maillage to somewhere in Scotland was incredible. The Scots built it years ago to show the world how a tourist railroad should be built.

Somehow, I think three weeks on a train could be more interesting than on a cruise.

Across Canada... found the accommodations too cramped, and not enough time in the scenic areas. They are old though and comfort is a must.

Dunno how old they are but I'm 73 and will have plenty of comfort in the coffin some day.

Ok, I'm not into spelunking all that much, and I have no intention of reserving a spot on the Everest climb, but I'm interested in new experiences, not new experiences from a comfortable chair.

This is not a slam on your in-laws--we all have our preferences, and if they don't hurt anyone, "just do it".

windows so you can see the entire sky! And the seats look amazingly comfortable.

I hope it wasn't this company because I am interested in finding out more.

The beauty of the mountains is spectacular. I hope you get to do it. It sounds truly amazing! The Rockies are in my backyard and I never tire of looking at them!

and imagine our own would be at least as spectacular. The train does go through the Rockies, and there are special mountain tours.
