By the look in his eyes and his demeanor, he knows he's not supposed to have it. My beagle liked to eat my babysitting money, pantyhose, books, etc. when I was growing up. If he had any of that (particularly money or pantyhose) in his mouth and his ears were back, if you took it away from him, he'd snap at you to try to get it back. If you were playing tug with his toys or rope, his ears were always more forward, and he'd stop as soon as you said "That's enough".
