Strangers at the post office tell me I didn't do something I just did...LONG

ya gotta love it!

Before going to the post office, I had just been to a store where I purchased several gift cards along with other items. When I got to the register at that store, I was informed I picked up an AMC gift card that could only be loaded 25 to 100 dollars. I needed one with $15 for a family game so I said never mind to that one as I was not going to make people behind me wait while I got another one.

Then I went to the post office for stamps and cards for my mother-in-law. I discovered they, too, sold gift cards and there was one for $15 for AMC. Perfect. The clerk rang up the order and I stuck my credit card into the chip reader. But when we both looked at the amount, I said that can't be right. And then the clerk said you can't pay for a gift card with a credit card. I said ok but that amount still isn't right. She hastily looked at the screen and pushed buttons and I said I needed to make sure there was money on the gift card (because the numbers did not add up - WAY short for my purchase.) She repeated that I would need to pay cash for the gift card - that you can't pay for gift cards with a credit card. I mumbled that I just did it at the previous store but fine, please void the whole thing and let me pay the correct amount. She could not figure out how to do this. Meanwhile, people in line behind me start weighing in. What kind of credit card are you using? The charges won't go through for 48 hours so you can't buy gift cards. I tell them I've done it for years. No, they don't allow it says another lady. I JUST DID IT AT PREVIOUS STORE. No, they say, it doesn't work that way. Look, I say, I put everything on this card so I can track my Christmas spending and get points. No the stores don't allow it. Some of the stores do says Clerk 3. No, says one guy, you can't. I pull out the receipt from previous store in a Grinch like fashion and practically yell ARE YOU TELLING ME I DID NOT DO WHAT I JUST DID?!!! Just stopped short of saying please shut the f up while I pay and get out of here.

Meanwhile, clerk 2 comes over and asks what's going on and clerk 1 says I've already paid for the stamps but not the gift card. Where's the receipt for the stamps? Clerk 1 says it never came out. Looking at the screen, it appears she rang up my order as though I was USING a gift card (hence the shortage) and now we were stuck in purchase limbo. Void. Purchase. Leave.

Still need one gift card.

It was more humorous than annoying.

Compared to the Defense Department. That's the department that can have a program end up a billion dollars out of balance and call it a "rounding error."

have the big budget that Defense does. I guess there are similar problems on a different scale.

but I don't go there as often as I used to. The internet has made things easier to ship directly from the store. And I usually buy stamps online and this may sound terrible but my mother in law is getting up there so I don't buy things too far ahead if you know what I mean.

Earlier this month my partner went to the PO to send a card to a friend in Austria. He noticed as soon as he got home that the AUS was picked up as Australia and that's where the card was being sent! Fortunately, he called the PO immediately, they were able to find the card and it was corrected to Austria. This is the second time this same thing happened, only the first time it actually was sent to Australia and took many weeks before it finally reached its correct destination.

I wonder how often that happens?

It's a long trip on a container ship from the U.S.A. to Australia and then another to Europe, at least eight weeks total.

It seems there are still places that make you use cash or debit to buy gift cards. Apparently the chip technology makes it safer to use a credit card for this now.

A few days later, I still find it funny that so many people in line had all the answers.
