NYTimes: Cats Film coughed up nothing but hairballs

Tom Hooper’s critically reviled “Cats” collapsed over the weekend, collecting $6.5 million at North American theaters after costing roughly $100 million to make, not including marketing expenses. At Hooper’s request, Universal sent theaters a version of “Cats” with slight special effects improvements over the weekend. Ticket buyers gave “Cats” a C-plus grade in CinemaScore exit polls.

1. It needs to pointed out that "patching" a film while it's released in theaters is unprecedented.

Did you know Taron Egerton recorded it all with Giles Martin, son of George Martin who produced the Beatles at Abby Rd? Incredible. They didn't have any other fantasy/musicals to emulate, and really worked through it by hand as they went. Beautiful, one-of-a-kind film. Took lots of risks that really made it feel like a love letter from Elton to his fans. (Elton produced from afar.)

I have a theory why it was panned by critics.

Matriarchal society (not in the original stage musical where Old Deuteronomy is male). No guns. No car chases. No space shit. And no sex.

It's about empathy. The female who is broken and battered wins the big ticket. The males do not dominate and the bad guy is not likeable.

It's poetry, song, and dance.

Jennifer Hudson turns in a masterful, controlled performance that had me in tears.

It's not Disney. I loved it.
