iPhone help, please.

I've had my 4S for a little over 8 years (I got it the day they came out).

Today I got an 11 Pro. Setting it up failed at the iCloud part, but I stumbled forward until I had a new iPhone with my old phone number.

I really only need my contacts, and I'd kinda like to transfer my pictures but that's not imperative as I have my pictures stored on two computers and a memory stick. I can download the few apps I had on the 4S that I really need. (4S is the 16 gig version...lol. My new phone is 256.)

My 4S is backed up on my laptop.
What exactly does "Restore from backup" do, or try to do, to a new phone?
Would I be better off just re-entering all my contacts on the new phone and just moving forward without the pics?

I can call call a tech tomorrow, but I was hoping one of you fine people knows the answer.

Each carrier usually has an app to transfer from an old phone to a new one. Cattledog Dec 2019 #5

Your carrier can swap your phone number for you. (I have to say “usually” because I used to do that for a major carrier. Once in a blue moon it just wouldn’t work, but very, very rare.) Maybe you already have.

If I lived close to an Apple store I would go there in a heartbeat. Just cuz.

You can use that restore function too, the Mac does a pretty good job. I have used it a few times. It will suck in all the information proper for the phone. There may be a couple of things you will have to fuss with later (from my experience). No biggy though. I’m a bit envious of your new phone.

I've got an Apple Store at the local mall. It's packed even when it ain't Xmas, and you basically need an appointment just to get in line. I'm going there anyway to re-up on all my side shit cause none of my stuff works with the new phone. (I'm going from thirty-pin to lightning, know'm say'n? ) I'll just ask them then. For now it works with my old number, and I've re-entered family and work contacts.

Thanks for the info, though. Very helpful.

I've used restore from backup to restore stuff to the same phone I backed it up from, but I never imagined using it to get my stuff from a 4 to an 11.

I think I better ask Apple Support.

Thanks for your reply, though. I really appreciate it.
