(5,727 posts)It was one of the better concerts I had seen in years. His voice was still outstanding.

Never lost his voice, because he always worked it.

Artur Brown came to the stage on a litter carried by six dudes.
He was backed by Atomic Rooster.

(5,944 posts)I remember that Tom Jones hosted his own variety show in the late 60's, but I didn't remember him being this cool. It looks to me as though the band backing him and Janis is her Cosmic Blues Band, rather than a house band.
I also found this video, in which he gets down most righteously with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (and Dallas Taylor and Greg Reeves):
What really impresses me about these takes is that they're done live, with the artists' traveling bands. None of the lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks that was the norm for TV shows in those days.
Dude was badder than I remembered.

(30,771 posts)But Janis is my all-time favorite.
I just purchased The Pearl Sessions, a two CD set. I have not listened to it yet. We have been listening to Christmas music.
Tom Jones had a reputation for being uncool because of some of the concerts he gave. All these grandmas would come to the concerts and swoon over him. They would throw their grannie underwear onstage while he sang.

(30,771 posts)I learned about The Pearl Sessions from the book. I was glad to see the cover photo, an iconic shot of Janis.
Otherwise, I did not learn anything else about Janis that I did not know already. Perhaps that is because I was a contemporary of Janis' and I have read everything I could find about her. I saw her in concert. I was blown away when she died.
I consider Buried Alive a dishonest book. I liked Sweet Scars of Paradise.

(3,089 posts)Buried Alive was dishonest and shitty, IMHO. Sweet Scars was about the best.

(21,215 posts)And asked the worker who it was. She said it was a new Tom Jones record. I brought the cassette and it was produced by his son. Tom over in Europe was rediscovered and did a cover of Princes song Kiss and he also had a big hit called Sex Bomb. Since that time I have seen him at least 3 times. He really puts on a great show with the old and new songs. Check out Kiss and Sex Bomb.

(30,771 posts)They all died at age 27. So did Amy Winehouse. I guess one can only abuse their body for so long.
Edie Sedgwick, a well-known socialite and person within the orbit of Andy Warhol, made it all the way to 28.

(5,183 posts)loved everything about her.
Too bad the hard drugs took her. And Jimi.
I like Tom Jones but Janis made him better.
Dancers were cracking me up....can't believe I danced like that too!

(2,496 posts)She does that Tibetan monk two-tone thing with her voice without even trying, and her abandon to the music is positively Dionysian. Great find!

(51,734 posts)So cute watching Tom follow her cues. He was clearly a Janis fan! But Tom held his own...which was no small feat standing next to Janis!
