(1,151 posts)I'm sad, I'm angry, I'm terrified. We're killing our planet and I'm about 90% certain it's already too late to fix it. And all the beautiful beings we share this planet with are paying the price. We might deserve to reap what we've sown, but they don't.
When I was little I longed to be someone like Jane Goodall or Daphne Sheldrick, devoting myself to studying and protecting animals and living in Kenya or Tanzania or South Africa. I didn't have the knack for the amount of science needed to do that kind of work, or the trust fund to allow me to set up a reserve. So a long time ago I decided I wanted to see as much of the world as I could before it was lost, and work in my own way to protect it. I knew even when others were willing to believe the lie about climate change that we were heading down a bad path.
I've been lucky to visit many amazing places. But for some reason every single trip I've tried to plan to Australia/New Zealand has been thwarted. I had an opportunity to go in the 90s and couldn't get my passport renewed in time. I tried to go for my 40th birthday and bunch of personal factors quashed that plan. I had plans to go next month and had to cancel because of scheduling issues with my SO. I guess it was a good thing because we'd like to have to change or cancel our plans now because of the fires. But now I'm feeling like my opportunity has slipped away. I might try to go and see how I can help at some point, but so much has been lost.
I don't mean to make this about me of course. There are people there who must live this nightmare and my problems are nothing compared to theirs. But thinking about it made me realizing how much we as humans are losing this race against time. We should be focusing 90% of our energy, money, scientific study and man-power towards trying to turn things around. Instead we're still trying to convince other humans that climate change is real, and that racism is bad, and that we shouldn't be electing orange reality-show narcissists to high office, and that what religion you are doesn't matter, and that everyone has a right to make their own decisions for their bodies.
