Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsAn update on the stray cat that adopted me
First, she's going to be fine. She's going to be staying at the veterinarian's until late Thursday when they have time to sedate her, bathe her and give her a thorough exam. But in the meantime, she's gotten antibiotics, she's eating like a champ--and they have treated her for a horrific lice infestation! I admit, I wish I had known about the lice before I invited her onto my bed. But hey, that's what washing machines are for, and at least it's not the same species that infects people. I'm going to have to get a spray and treat the outdoor shelter where she hung out for a few days, and treat the couple of cats who have been in that shelter since she left, as well as my indoor cats.
Because she's so dirty and lice-infested, the vet thinks she got stuck in someone's trash can.
The really, really good news is that my vet isn't going to charge me for any of this: they are affiliated with a nonprofit that pays for feral cats to be trapped/neutered/vaccinated/released. She isn't feral and she isn't going to be released, but they just got a huge donation so they're being flexible.
Here she is dropping lice eggs on the comforter:

(8,208 posts)But I tell myself it's a week or two of aggravation, more than balanced by her living a good, long, happy life.
Warpy
(111,358 posts)and a fine tooth comb will tell you if there are any of them to worry about. Chances are the shelter isn't infested, but if she's a real sweetheart, she might have infested the other cats in the area, so a treated towel in the shelter might help them. Any lice were going to find you distinctly unpalatable, so just washing the bedding will do to make sure there's nothing hiding in there to jump onto a cat.
I love to see the sweet ones get homes because I know how grateful they'll be. Rescued adult cats are the best.
femmedem
(8,208 posts)But that's reassuring about the eggs not dropping everywhere. The vet suggested the mycodex spray, but I hope it's overkill. She does seem to like other cats--her first instinct was to touch noses with one of mine, before I was able to shepherd her into the bedroom.

(34,125 posts)are you still adopted or is she going to be going to someone else? She looks like a real beauty once she gets everything settled. I am so happy she will be OK.
femmedem
(8,208 posts)But if I find a good home for her, that's a good outcome for her as well. No one locally seems to know her, so I don't think anyone will claim her as their lost cat. (I posted her on social media.)
It's possible that Mr. Femmedem will say no, but we lost one over the summer so we have a little room at the inn.

Meanwhile, I wish I had known about the lice before I invited her onto my bed. But hey, that's what washing machines are for - no no, femmedem, never EVER throw your kitteh into the washing machine!! (ha ha, I kid I kid)
As I noted before, look at the EARS on that gal!!!

(15,090 posts)Its not uncommon for domesticated cats to turn up in feral colonies, either because theyre lost or because someone dumped them there. We had one recently show up in a colony another volunteer manages. This cat turned out to be chipped and was an indoor cat who got out six months ago and had been the subject of a frantic search by her owners. Be sure to have your stray scanned for a chip.
femmedem
(8,208 posts)I imagine it's standard for the vet to check for a chip, but I'll make sure. I did post her on social media and check through months of lost cat photos on our animal control dept. page, but unless someone abandoned her, someone somewhere is missing her.
One of my cats escaped a few years ago. There were sightings in the neighborhood for about a week, then superstorm Sandy hit, and no one saw him again. But someone did keep pulling down the lost cat fliers, so to this day I sometimes look for him in apartment windows.

femmedem
(8,208 posts)No, just kidding. I don't really want to think of her lice every time I say her name.
Yes, my vet is awesome! They had just gotten a $20,000 donation for this kind of work, so this girl picked the right time to get sick.

(2,212 posts)I'm laughing at your remark, "Here she is dropping lice eggs on the comforter." Too funny: Clearly, you are a true cat lover. I hope your black and white ball of fluff turns into a wonderful (and lice-free) companion. I suspect she will and I look forward to more pictures soon.

But one of my friends saw a photo of her and instantly named her Mattie Mae, so maybe that will stick.

(20 posts)For helping her. After washing the comforter, dry it in the dryer on high. Heat kills lice & nits. You can even use a hairdryer on things you cannot wash.

Regarding the lice, a good hot wash and a hot dryer should kill any eggs on the bedding. Carpet can be vacuumed and the vacuum put outside if it's cold where you are?

(24,053 posts)Perhaps it was this thread about lost cats that resulted in my bad dream last night of My tuxedo girl getting lost.
In the dream, she and I were taking a walk in the woods, with her on a leash - something we do not do as my cats are strictly indoor critters. As the dream progressed, she got away from me and ran so fast into the woods that I could not find her. I was frantic.
Dream cat showed up at the back door in a heavy rainstorm, meowing to be let into her house.
I sure was glad to wake up.
Once she is lice-free, give this girl a hug from me - . One for you, too.
femmedem
(8,208 posts)And how sweet it must have been to wake up and find her safe with you.

(206,075 posts)So glad that you found each other and thanks for sharing your good news! I've adopted two kitties that I rescued from outdoors as well, one older and one a little kitten, and my Felix is still with me, it's been over five years and he's grown up into a beautiful cat. Rescued kitties are the best...
