The story on why Planters killed off Mr. Peanut

Why Planters killed off Mr. Peanut
Megan Graham CNBC 2 days ago

This week, snack brand Planters released a dramatic video showing the apparent death of its mascot, Mr. Peanut.

It turns out choosing to kill off the iconic 104-year-old nut had something to do with the weird phenomenon of how people mourn the deaths of fictional characters (like Iron Man), according to a creative leader behind the campaign.

Kraft Heinz's Planters on Tuesday released a cryptic tweet with a link to a video showing Mr. Peanut sacrificing himself to save actors Wesley Snipes and Matt Walsh, leading the mascot to plunge to his death. On Wednesday, the brand shared the video, which as of Thursday morning had nearly 1.5 million views on YouTube.

The spot, done with VaynerMedia, will appear before Super Bowl kickoff during the pregame show. Then, during the third quarter of the game, the brand promises to "broadcast Mr. Peanut's funeral, so the world can mourn the loss of the beloved legume together."

I mean think about it. What kind of person sells his own kind to be eaten while he profits from it. It's just terribly mind numbing.

I expected him to just crack up.

I hope his death wasn't long and painful; I would want him to go out in a Jiffy. But I won't mourn for him; I know he's gone on to a butter life.

14. I've disliked the "new" Mr. Peanut since they introduced him

In fact, I dislike him so much, I have stopped buying Planters nuts for years. Glad to see him gone.

Aside from my personal animus, Planters went fully strange in 2018:

I suppose I could have said, “This is nuts,” but that was a little to easy/obvious.

demonstrated in Mr. Peanut's top hat, cane and monocle.

Their sales are probably suffering from all the generic brand sales of nut snacks. Watch for something more cartoonish and eye-appealing to young people in the future.

I go back to the 50s with Planters when a 5-cent bag of salted peanuts and a 5-cent Coka-Cola was a very special treat.
