(28,820 posts)Unless its on me or in the house.
When I was maybe 5, our dog cornered a skunk on our porch barking. When my mom opened the door to see what was up the skunk ran through the door and sprayed everything in sight including the dog and my mother.
We had to move out. I dont remember what they did to get rid of that smell but a week later we moved back in. Maybe we had new furniture but it didnt smell any more.
So now.. driving the car over or when a dog got sprayed I could handle it.

(62,423 posts)I was in a car full of folks when saw the proverbial dead skunk in the middle of the road. This young fellow said "Don't you just love the smell of a skunk?" he was quite serious.
We peppered him with questions for a few minutes and it became clear he was quite serious. Not only was the skunk not offensive to him, he actually liked the smell of a skunk. He actually couldn't understand why everybody else thought they smelled bad.
If there was one thing I thought was universal among humans it was that everybody thought skunks stunk. I was wrong.

(53,410 posts)When its fresh it is OK at first, but then it kind of clings in your nose and gets bad, but after a day or so the odor is not bad at all. Its rather pleasant. Its like the difference between the smell of a drop or so of perfume as opposed to pouring the whole bottle of perfume on yourself.

(82,849 posts)In college, we took a little theater production out on the road. One of the stops was in my home town, about 50 miles away. As such, I drove the lead car to get us to the venue and back again. We set out on the return trip just before 11 p.m. The route out of town was through some windy rural roads before meeting up with the main highway back to campus. There was a shadow on the road ahead, and by the time I spotted it, it was too late to swerve or avoid the critter. Just before impact, the headlights picked up the white stripe down the skunk's back. We got a small dose of skunk spray, but the car behind me received the bulk of it. The smell was nauseating, but tolerable, but we knew the car behind us really got blasted. I looked in the rearview and observed, "I don't think they're following us so much as chasing us now."
