(23,105 posts)I didn't get to see him for 4 long years. On the way home from the airport, Mom said the dogs next door had turned him mean and don't to up to him and reach my hand through the fence, he'd bite. I didn't listen (how not surprising), telling her I know he will know me! As I walked up, he was barking furiously and mom and dad were yelling at me to stop. There was a fence, I wasn't worried. I walked up to still barking Otto, and called his name several times while putting my palm up to the fence. He stopped barking, tilted his head both ways, then started wagging all over and licking my hand and jumping up to get to me. I knew damn well my sweet smart Schnauzer would know me and he definitely did. He was such a good dog, smartest dog I ever knew. He knew how to navigate red lights - seriously!

Interesting story; thanks for posting it.

(23,105 posts)They were always at the fence biting at him and barking loudly if anyone on the block moved. He only barked at people in uniforms when he was with me. Because of the jerk dogs, he too started barking at everything, so I do fault them for that, but they couldn't change his sweet loving heart for his people.
Awww. That has to be gratifying.

(53,410 posts)The voice first, but then the shape was confusing. Probably the woman had her hair up when she usually wore it down, so doubt sets in and the uniform was strange. Then the woman obviously passed the smell test! With flying, glorious colors!

(35,687 posts)I'm asking because in two months, I will be returning my brother's cat, for whom I have been caring since Fall 2018 (18 months). She needed special care that my brother couldn't provide after his area was hit with a natural disaster (flood). He's really excited about getting her back and I wonder how she will react. I will be flying her 1500 miles to return her.

(1,151 posts)would always be really mad when I got home for a few minutes. Yelling all kinds of things at me. Then about 5 minutes later they both glued themselves to me and wouldn't let me out of their sight. They were the best.

(4,079 posts)When we first arrive home we are "punished" for leaving, but after a few minutes they won't leave our sides. My hubby and I each have a cat of our "own" and they both react this way. My kitty will sleep on top of me for several nights after we've been away for a few days, like she's going to stop me from ever doing that again.

(7,627 posts)Once, a young man placed a kitten in the neighbors mailbox. The owners of that mailbox found the kitten and provided a loving home.
Several years later, the young man that stuck the kitten in the neighbors mailbox returned home from the military. He stopped by the same neighbors house and visited with them not knowing that they had adopted that kitten. As he sat on the couch talking with the neighbors, the now full grown cat silently crept up behind his recognized enemy, jumped on the man while in the process drawing blood from his face with claws out at full force.
Cats remember good people and the jerks who stick them in mailboxes.

(4,608 posts)He was going through a rough time and moving a few states away. The original plan was for us to keep Mr. Whiskers for a couple months, till our friend and his daughter got settled in, but he ending up staying with us for over a year. Mr. W. was never very affectionate with me and my BF but, whenever his owner came to visit, Mr. W was all over him, purring and super lovey.
When our friend and his daughter came to pick Mr. W up to take him home (finally! we loved the little guy but he didnt get along with my male cat and the conflict really stressed out one of my female kitties), Mr. W was so happy. More animated than I had ever seen him, especially as he got reacquainted with the daughter, who he hadnt seen in over a year.
They definitely remember their people.

(7,300 posts)Was gone for about 6 months for military training. My 2 year old son did not recognize me at first. Once we got home from the airport and I was able to change into civilian clothing he finally recognizes me. This video and others like it always triggers that memory. Thanks for posting.
