you might want to listen to Jack Cassady, especially the very melodic arpeggiated runs in the middle.

Not bragging but as soon as I saw the post that line started running through my head. Still have my copy of Live at the Fillmore East, the sleeve a bit tattered and the records scratched but I listen to so many songs from that album. This is one of my favorites and I agree it is the best bass intro, leading into Gregg's growling, soulful singing.
