The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI watched the Wizard of Oz today with a 3 year old, this was her first time.
She is a neighbor's kid, I watch the kid sometimes to give her Mom a break.
This kid just loved the movie.
I remember watching this movie on a b/w tv when I was a little kid.
This movie is timeless.

(19,378 posts)In the days before VCRs and 37,000 cable channels, the networks used to play movies like this ONCE a year! It was always a big deal when it was going to be on. We got our first color set in 1969, before that, the only time I saw anything in color was at the movie theater.

(26,117 posts)once a year for the W of Oz. It was a 19" - larger than our usual tv, so my dad built a special table for it. That was great! I'll always love that movie.

(23,998 posts)And there was only one commercial break. I want to say that it was for Crest toothpaste but I also recall a Timex commercial. Maybe there were different sponsors, over the years. Anyway, the Wizard of Oz and the filmed version of Mary Martin in the stage production of Peter Pan were the biggest deals of the year on TV.
After Peter Pan, my sister and I would get the tubes of glitter from our mom's gift-wrapping cabinet. Then, we'd stand on our beds, throw handfuls of glitter into the air, and jump off the ends of our beds, hoping we could fly.

I was scared shitless. To this day, I don't know whether my throwing up was the flu...
or the way they flew.

Funny aside: Back when Ted Turner was colorizing all the old B&W classics, I think
it was National Lampoon that announced that he was going to colorize the B&W parts
of "The Wizard of Oz".
.
Some believed the hoax and were ready to storm Castle Turner with pitchforks and
torches.

(12,132 posts)I used to watch H.R. Puff N Stuff and I was confused in that I thought the witch from Wizard of Oz was real and after the movie got a job as Witchie Poo on H.R. Puff N Stuff.
I understood the concept of "dying" in movies and TV shows but I guess I didn't understand that people weren't the characters. lol I thought it was nice they gave her a job after how mean she was in WoOz.
