I don't know if this is the place for this, but I have a question about an app called Hangouts.

You know, it's one of those social media type things where you can video chat with your friends. Somebody from Facebook (a woman, of course) asked me to put it on my phone so we could more readily communicate. Ordinarily, I'm not inclined to do such things, but this woman is pretty good-looking so I did. I tried it with her tonight, and though the video worked well (I could see her and she could see me), I couldn't get the audio to work. I did notice a slash through the microphone icon so I clicked that icon hoping to open the mike, but it didn't seem to help. We managed by typing out text, but of course, it would flow more smoothly if we could just talk.

I've never used this app before and I'm not generally familiar with these kinds of apps, so I'm sure it's your basic operator error. I'm sure I'll eventually figure it out, but I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this app and can maybe tell me what I'm doing wrong. Again, the mic icon did have a slash through it indicating it was not enabled, but clicking the icon didn't remove the slash. Maybe I missed something.

In settings, have you given permission for apps to use your audio? Squinch May 2020 #1
Have heard of some sound issues like yours The solution was to connect through headphones/buds. Budi May 2020 #2

Also, I find Hangouts works better on Chrome than on other browsers. It was very glitchy on others I tried.

They also couldn't hear through use of their built-in mics but could hear each other fine when they plugged a headset into the jack on their laptop.

Try it if you haven't already done so.
Good luck & enjoy your newly found "like minded friends".

Just offering a possible solution ~🍃
