Yeah, I am invincible now, got $35 set of clippers and took the deep plunge, easy, looks good, feels great, I never believed I could do it!
The fear is gone, I can do anything now, a life changing experience, for sure.
The YouTube videos helped, " avoiding common mistakes cutting your own hair" was a good one, I took my time, I am alive!

(12,712 posts)Good for you. You should be proud.
The reason I am commenting is that I have been cutting my own hair for years. When the price of a haircut became high enough, I bought a clipper kit for he same price as having it cut, ($18) and it didn't really take long for it to be as easy and natural as brushing one's teeth.
For those considering it, just a little bravery, patience and practice, (maybe some online tuts) does the trick.

(4,613 posts)I also just bought some clippers and did my first DIY haircut over the weekend. Had to buy a large hand mirror as well to make sure that I didn't miss anything in the back. Once you jump in and do it, there's no stopping!

(11,931 posts)Its scary! Glad it turned out for you! And no matter what, itll grow back!
I used to do mine when it was short, but now its just migrated into a bob that I keep trimmed. Did hubbys hair the other day and learned right away to check the height of the clippers when he hands them to me. I Didnt check, so it started at a 1 for about a 1 patch on the back. Quickly changed it to a 5 and finished the top with an 8. 😀

(14,337 posts)I always trimmed it myself. Bangs are easy to trim yourself, and I have trimmed them during salon closures.
The problem is when you have short layered hair. You would have to hold a mirror in one hand looking into another mirror to trim each layer on back of your head with scissors in your other hand.
Are you really that dexterous? All the stylists I have had use TWO hands to do that.
Other than my bangs, I just left my hair until we entered Green Phase and the Salons opened. Masks required for that. No problem. By my ears, they said take your mask off around your ears, hold it in front of your face, and pinch your nose while we cut around your ears.
FYI, for the protocol for cutting hair.

(14,337 posts)but each layer? Very difficult to do. How do you keep one layer from the rest of the hair without using another hand for separation? As I said, even stylists use two hands to separate the layers when cutting.
Better to just LEAVE IT until salons reopen if you have layers on back of your head.
Men got it a lot easier. Until the salons reopened, my husband went with the Mountain Man look, including not cutting his beard.
My daughter just shaved her young sons hair into the Mohawk look.
