Aaron Sorkin's delicious dialogue back on TV. (Original Post) russ1943 Jun 2012 OP
I've heard some pretty tepid reviews of it so far, I'm sorry to say Orrex Jun 2012 #1

And it's not the politics they complain about; HuffPo was one of the biggest deriders. Supposedly it's a barrage of people yelling over one another. The jist I get is that it feels like a parody of a Sorkin-written show.

A shame too. I had it DVR-ed. I'll still watch it, but I expected virtually unanimous praise.

Impressive first episode, with the usual Sorkin-style first episode soliloquies.

My two favorites:

1. We waged wars on poverty not poor people.
2. We aspired to intelligence - we didn’t belittle it, it didn’t make us feel inferior.

If we could fix those two things, we'd go a long way in the real world.

However, my fear is that, just as the West Wing was the opiate of liberals that made the tragedy of the 2004 election seem less devastating to those who watched (Honestly, I think there were liberals running around thinking Martin Sheen was President), this show may be likewise an opiate that softens the pain of Faux News. I hope not.

It's classic Sorkin, like 'Sports Night' and 'The West Wing,' with echoes of Mamet. I like it.

Still, I wouldn't make to much of it. It's just a TV show.

One critic slammed Sorkin for just putting 'Sports Night' in a different setting. I don't care...I LOVED 'Sports Night.'

I caught parts of it while doing other things, and the dialogue I heard is classic Sorkin (with similarities to Mamet).

"Aaron Sorkin's delicious dialogue"? I'd agree that it's delicious and that it's back.

Full disclosure: I still miss 'Sports Night' and 'The West Wing.'

I thought the British woman was annoying though.

I enjoyed seeing the inner workings and all the pressure of producing a news program. I was surprised that they actually "covered" a true story (the oil spill in the Gulf).

I think it looks promising. There isn't much to watch in the summer.

She's the true believer, the one that believes America can do better. He's cynical and doing his damnedest to be a high-ratings, inoffensive talking head until she disturbs his well-polished order and pushes him out of his comfort zone.

In a very real sense, she makes him not an asshole. There's a dialogue early on between Daniels' character and Watterson's to the effect of "When did you last see her?" "About 3 years." "That's about the last time you were likable."
