I have to admit I wanted to see it because I came of age during that period. I remember going to the clubs and fawning over musicans and trying my absolutely dardnest to keep my baby fine blonde hair in that big poofy hair. I was an Aquanet abuser back then.
In general I enjoyed the movie. The plot was weak but doable. The selection of songs and how they were used was interesting. You had to appreciated the religious women, lead by Catherine Zeta-Jones, singing Twisted Sister's "We're Not Going to Take it". But the highlight of the movie, without a doubt, had to be Tom Cruise.
Let's start with what sucked. I realized that a movie about 1987 needs to find a way to appeal to kids today so they had this 20-something couple. The girl was fresh off the bus from Oklahoma looking to find love and stardom in Los Angeles. And like any typical movie where the small town girl goes to the big city (See "Burlesque" and "Coyote Ugly" the girl gets robbed of all her belongings. I saw that bad plotline before she got off the bus. But somehow the sweet boy who is a musician wannabe saves the day and helps her get a job at The Bourbon Room (a play on the legendary Whiskey-A-Go-Go, the real rock bar on Sunset Strip). I'm not going to bore you with the details but they could have had less of those 2 and more of the rest of the cast.
From what I read, the religious women were not a part of the Broadway musical but a way to add in some more talent and songs. It was a bit corny but well cast with Catherine Zeta-Jones as the religious wife of mayor played nicely by Brian Cranston. Zeta-Jones and her women are one of 2 antagonists out to get the Bourbon Room shut down and put an end to filthy music. The other Antogonist was Paul Giamanti playing Stace Jaxx's seedy manager. BTW who would have thought Giamanti could sing but he does play slime really well.
The other interesting pair in the movie was the club owner played by Alec Baldwin and his sidekick which was Russell Brand. I'll be honest, I had thought the club owner was poorly cast probably from being a '30 Rock' fan and so use to seeing Baldwin as a suit. But as the movie progressed I really started to buy into the part that Baldwin played (and yes he sings) and towards the end of the movie we had a lovely twist that had the audience quite surprised.
But lets face it - the person that most folks wanted to see was Tom Cruise. This was definitely an unexpected role for Cruise, a man use to playing the lead role and romantic lead. If you look back at Tom Cruise's acting history you'll find that some of his most memorable roles are not the lead ones but the supporting player and usually someone who comes across as a bit of an asshole. That would include parts he had in "Rain Man", "Magnolia" and one of my favorite's "Tropic Thunder" (who recognized him as the Movie Mogul?). What was amazing is that Cruise has to be hitting 50 soon and here he was playing a 30-something primadonna rock god of a hard hitting 80s Metal Band and let me tell you this - he owned it. Not just his singing, which was pretty darn good, but the image he portrayed was WOWZA! He was to play this rock legend filled of himself and it was a grand slam. I'd ALMOST go see the movie again in the theaters but I really don't want to sit thru that corny love-story but I may get the BlueRay so I can watch it again without teeny boppers. And btw, this could be another Oscar nomination for Cruise - I thought it was that well done!

(56,912 posts)Duets is a road-trip comedy which revolves around the little known world of karaoke and the whimsical characters who inhabit it. There's the struggling singer who dreams of making it to the big time, a frustrated salesman who ends up on an unexpected road trip, the dysfunctional family performers which includes a con-artist and his long lost daughter, and an escaped convict with the voice of an angel. All roads lead to Omaha, site of a national karaoke competition where this motley group of singers and stars come together for a blow-out sing-off.

(1,197 posts)Your review was on the money, LynneSin. It was a goofy, fun movie. Cruise was excellent. Zeta-Jones can belt out a song.

(19,374 posts)He was outstanding as Les Grossman and just as good as Jaxx. Giamatti is one of my favorite slimeball character actors (stole the movie Big Fat Liar, and was hilarious in Shoot 'Em Up). Baldwin was perfect as the aging rock impresario. I've known a few and he nailed it.
Fun movie overall, but like you I think I'll wait to see it again when it comes out on disc.

(16,334 posts)I can't stand Tom Cruise but I am happy to hear that he doesn't ruin the movie. I pretty much expected a corny storyline but I thought the music and outfits would be fun.
Thanks for a great review!

(95,337 posts)I am the same way as you - I can't stand Tom Cruise as an actor. I'm still not a fan but I'll give credit where it's due and Cruise owned Stacee Jaxx.
It reminded me alot of when they brought 'Hairspray the Musical' to the movie theaters. The role of the mother from the original movie and the Broadway musical was played by 2 very iconic, larger than life people. Divine in the original (a larger than life drag queen) and then keeping with the 'man playing the mom' line they casted Harvey Fierstein in the broadway musical. Both of them owned that part when they played it. So when I heard that in the movie (which btw same director as 'Rock of Ages') cast John Travolta as the mother, well I thought it was a joke.
I didn't see the movie until the video came out and I walked away recognizing the best character in that movie was John Travolta. Travolta didn't try to play the part the way Divine or Fierstein played it but instead created this fun endearing and a bit campy mom. She was part of the best couple in that movie which was her and her husband played by Christopher Walkens. And since both of them have a dance background they just looked amazing together with their song & dance numbers. Still not a Travolta fan but when I see the movie on TV I usually watch a bit of it just to see those 2 in it.
When you see Cruise in this movie you're gonna see all the best lead singers of those great 80s bands wrapped up into one Stacee Jaxx. He did well with the part.

(10,952 posts)to seeing it until I saw that Tom Cruise was in it. I can't stand him and refuse to spend even a penny for anything he is in. I'll wait for it to come on TV.

(95,337 posts)I felt the same way about Cruise but I'm glad I went anyways. He owned the movie and it was definately worth seeing on the big screen.
I see the movie isn't doing well at the box office and to be honest - I blame the bad acting from those 2 20-something kids they had play the 'big' love story.

(20,277 posts)Tom Cruise was in it I was going to pass. But since he doesn't make a hot mess of it, I'll wait for it to come to On Demand.
Thanks for the review, LynneSin.
