The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI started a job this week at a no-kill shelter.
Background: I have been out of the work force for 11 years. I was fortunate to be able to stay at home after having my kids who are 6 and 10. We are by no means rich, live paycheck to paycheck and due to some recent events in the past year (car accident, son "needs" braces although his teeth look pretty damn straight to me--thats a 5 grand hit with insurance) we racked up a bunch of debt which made things even tighter.
My youngest started school full time last year, and I was quite bored and planned on getting as job when the kids went back to school this fall, but face it. Who the hell wants to hire a 42 year old that hasn't worked in over a decade? I was thinking of applying at the Gap, TJ Maxx..you get the drift.
Last week my son went to his friend's house that was in his class this past year and I talked to his Mom at length. Turns out she used to work at this shelter which is the same one we adopted our dog from last year and they were looking for weekend help. I interviewed, was hired and started training this week. I will be working all day Saturdays and Sundays and during the fall can pick up weekday shifts. They were looking for an "older" (haha) person to supervise the younger employees.
I clean cages, interview potential adopters, feed/water the cats and dogs, walk the dogs laundry, work the desk--pretty much everything.
I LOVE IT! The pay is more than minimum wage, and being an animal lover it's right up my alley. Everyone has been so nice and helpful, and the uniform is a nursing scrubs top and I wear my yoga pants. I am so lucky I was fortunate enough to find this job.
The only problem is I already have my sights set on a dog and a cat I want to bring home, but my husband already gave me the "warning." No more animals at this time. I'm working on it though!
Just wanted to share; I am so happy!

(28,394 posts)I always wondered what it would be like to volunteer at a shelter... and since I'm nearing retirement, I have been thinking about it even more.
Like you, I know I would want every critter that came in the door. It must be so gratifying to see them to to good homes, though.
Keep up the great work! for you!

(5,909 posts)The shelter rescues animals from Animal Control that are about to be euthanized. So many great, loving animals that need and deserve loving homes. I'm sure I'll shed some tears!

Unsolicited advice - I would respect the husband's wishes on not bringing home animals. If one was in an accident or sick, the vet bills could wipe out your entire income, and it sounds like you already have some financial stress in your marriage. You're not going to want to be in a position to have to chose between paying bills, saving for your son's college, or not giving appropriate care to a pet you adopt, and you really won't need the arguments or guilt if you do end up in that position.
I spent well over a thousand on cat bills last year trying to do the right thing for a cat I knew was going to die in the end anyway, my sister blew a few thousand on bills for a pet rabbit and is dodging creditor phone calls now and worried month to month about being foreclosed on.
