The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsFinished my class "A" truck driving school, and phase 1 'Over the Highway' training (22k miles).
I am home for the next 3 days, and will report to my school to do my upgrade course (2 day) which will allow my to proceed to my phase 2 OTH training (10k) and then my own truck, and market pay.
The company I'm working for is setup so that the best pay is had by leasing a new truck from the company. After paying expenses and factoring in the fuel allowance it comes out to around 40-43 cents a mile, as opposed to the starting out pay of 25 cents per mile for company drivers.
I'm not going to be away from home 26 or 27 days each month for a lousy 25 cpm.
Driving is tolerable, but can be a little stressful in traffic congested construction zones. So far I've been all over the midwest but not to the deep south or east coast, not yet anyway.
Oh and BTW, if I hear anyone say that southern Californian's can't drive in the rain, I say bullshit, I've driven a big-rig in Chicago in the rain.

(24,380 posts)As one of the handful of DU'er Truckers, and if I may toot my own airhorn, one with about as many miles any any of them in my back pocket, let me say, Welcome to the Brotherhood, as it were.
If there are any questions I might be able to answer, please feel free to ask. I drove my first tractor trailer the year after I got out of HS, in 1978. I am closing on 1.8 million accident free miles driving tractor trailers and have driven in all but one of the lower 48 states (Vermont - just never had to go there, that's all), in all weather conditions, 3 Canadian Provinces and all but about 1200 miles of the US interstate system. I have crossed I 90, I 80, I 70, I 40, I 20, I 10 and all of the North/South highways numerous times end to end.
FWIW, $.25 PM was the going rate for an experienced driver when I got my first OTR gig in 1987....and that gig paid ME $.12 PM! Yup. Twelve Cents Per MIle. Drive 1000 miles, make $120.00 Woo HOO! Worked out to about $6.50 an hour or so.
I haul cars. I drive a "Parking Lot". But I have hauled dry freight of all types and bumped plenty of docks. I got into car hauling because it seemed interesting and it pays pretty well AND because many car haul companies use day cabs. Having a card to get a hotel every night beats the living shit out of having to sleep in a truckstop and walk across a 20 acre, piss soaked, shit stained parking lot to take a shower in the morning.
Want to drive and live like a human?
Get a day cab job with a hotel card.
I wish you the very best of luck, and please stay safe.
And please....PLEASE...stay out of the middle lane of a 3 lane interstate! The guy passing you on your right giving you the dirty look will be me!

(9,901 posts)A hotel card sounds awesome!!! I am obligated to work my current company at least 6 months to pay back my "free" tuition. I will stay with this company for at least 1 year, and possibly 2 (companies like Schneider requires 2 years experience).
