dogs could do that. Dog owners: is there a reason why they do it? Or is it random.

(30,252 posts)The poodle did it because he heard another dog yelping in distress. The neighbor's dog tried to jump the fence and somehow got her rear paw stuck in the chain link, so she was dangling by that one leg. Rescuing her was not fun, but she wasn't seriously hurt.

(3,894 posts)#2 Sirens.
Both my wolfmix and my shepherd mix would howl similarly (though I did not own them at the same time, ie separately) for either situation. Heaven forbid, the neighbors told me, should he be lonely when sirens were near by, that apparently became very loud and melancholic.

(6,581 posts)Almost always when a siren such as the tornado sirens or a fire truck/ambulance is going off. One did it once when they were redoing the siding on our house and using a saw to cut some oak lumber and it made a really high pitched whine.
So I think it's probably a response to certain tones, brings out some primal instinct about howling.

(70,706 posts)He's about 4 yrs older than in this pic. When I start, he gets sort of anxious with me going on, until he finally joins in. Note: I don't do this very often, hardly at all. Really. Mostly to show visitors.
Plus, somebody who acted like a connoisseur about dogs seemed to look down on howling dogs, sniffing that genuine Lhasa Apsos *don't* howl.

(17,742 posts)They are not all at the same house but they all howl in unison, and the weird part is that they ALL stop on a dime at the exact same time, it just goes silent suddenly.
My dog has never joined in. She doesn't even seem to notice it somehow.

(50,130 posts)It really is comical, if a bit unearthly. He puts his nose up in the air, whimpers a bit, and then starts the most wild howling. It's hard to get him to stop. So I don't do it very often. Blood-curdling, if I didn't know it was a very sweet doggie doing it.

(12,660 posts)If there was a siren going by, or the owners were listening to something that was at a high, warbling pitch, most dogs would howl.
Dogs will also howl if they've been left alone too long or if they're hurting. It's the way they call out to their pack for support and/or comfort.
Did a firetruck or ambulance go by recently or is your neighbor or a member of their family that might be the dog's "alpha" gone this weekend?

First time we heard her it was chilling.
They all actually howled, but she sounded almost exactly like a wolf.
My two girls now (GSDs) like to howl. We have "howl fests" every so often

I'll point out that he's a completely spoiled baby who goes to work with my husband every day and spends very little time alone.

(35,699 posts)I believe a hound, such as a beagle, is more apt to howl than some other dogs. But of course wolves and coyotes howl also. Some croon more than actually howl.
