Need Advice! I've Had it With My Sunday Newspaper Service!

Need some advice here. I subscribe to the Sunday newspaper. Its convenient, especially in the winter and on these hot days where I don't have to go out. I started this back in January 1st. For the entire month of January, I would see the driver deliver the paper to the house across the street and the house a few doors down and so on and then miss us. I would call and report it and one would be delivered an hour later or so and that was that. For 7 weeks in a row they misses us and for 7 weeks I had to call it in and have one delivered later.

By the 6th or 7th week I was really getting snotty when I called. I never yelled or used profanity but I let them know how frusterated I was. The problem seemed to be solved, but it would start up again after 5 or 6 weeks. Since then it seems like I get the Sunday paper for 5 or 6 weeks and then they miss me. I call it in and sometimes by the next week the paper is delivered as normal or they miss me again and it starts up the following week.

They missed me last on June 3rd and then again today. What irritated me today was I saw the driver deliver to the house across the street and the house a few doors down. They get to my house and just stop. They sat there for about 2 or 3 minutes and then drove off without leaving a paper. I got out and walked around the block. Every house that subscribes got their paper but me. I called and complained and ask the rep to have her manager call me tomorrow. I've been up since 6:30. The driver delivered papers to the house across the street and the rest of the neighborhood at 6:50 this morning.I have to wait to report the paper at 8:30. Its now after 10 AM and still no replacement paper.

Being nice gets me no where. Who can I complain to? What can I do? I hate cancelling my subscription but this paper has NO COMPETITION! I hear how this paper is losing money and subscriptions are down and then just shake my head.

Anyone have any advice on what I can do? Thanks for listening!

Driver could help identify actual cause of apparent communication problem. AND, if driver was mad after initial 'complaint,' 2-way 'apology' could follow.

You can pretty much get all the news you need online. My local newspaper is the Daily Oklahoman (Columbia Journalism wrote a scathing review of it a few years ago) and is referred to many around here as the Daily Disappointment. I got rid of taking the paper a few years ago. One of my co-workers brings it to work most work days and I can scan it during the week if I am that interested but I have noticed that their website will have the biggest articles on line. Living in a 100% red state it is not like I am really going to miss something by not reading the local paper.

I would find out who is the absolute head of your local paper and write them a letter explaining exactly why you are canceling the paper. I would also point out that it does not make good business sense to alienate their reader base because newspapers are in the process of going the way of dinosaurs - extinct. Decreasing readership will only make the slide to extinction faster.

Free Republic has a copy of the review of the Daily Oklahoman.

At my place the thing usually shows up at about 3:00 AM and we haven't seen the driver since the youngest kid hit 4 months old.

It sounds like your driver is either a jerk or not that bright. In addition to going up the management tree I'd send an email to custserv@courant.com.

Good luck.

I've had the opposite problem when someone from the paper called snotty as hell because my subscription expired. And I had paid it!

I think the department is called Circulation.

If they can't figure this out after this long, they don't care and are never going to bother to really give you the kind of service you pay for. I would just cancel.

I was thinking of that but thought I should talk to their manager/boss first. One thing that needs to be pointed out is this IS NOT AN HONEST MISTAKE OR BLUNDER. This HAS TO be intentional. 7 weeks in a row? Then they miss every 5 or 6 weeks? Today they sat out in front of my house and then drove off,so it's not like they ran short of newspapers.

I use to be a paperboy. I was 13 and it was to this day, my BEST/favorite job. I would count my papers before I would begin my route. If I was short,I would call the paper's hotline, report it,and usually miss the last house on my route. I did this before I even began my paper route and often, the newspaper would be delivered by the bulk driver before I even finished my route. AT 13 years old I would NEVER intentionally miss someone. If this driver stopped and missed us for whatever reason,it is THEIR responsibility to report it & make sure we get a paper.

TRUST ME,I have given this driver the benefit of the doubt. I have thought of every possible scenario. I hate confrontation and if I approach her(I am pretty sure my driver is a woman, unless she drives and there is someone on the passenger side) I will give this driver an earful.

Oh, and FYI. 10:27 AM and the replacement paper JUST ARRIVED!

I've found that a generous holiday tip along with a note explaining who you are and where you live and thanking the deliverer goes a long way to ensuring better service.

Why should the subscriber have to pay for the subscription and then pay EXTRA to bribe the drive into doing his/her job? And if this is the driver's plan, to extort extra money, the driver should be reported to the publisher. In other service businesses, tipping is for good service. No service gets no tip.

but consider, "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" as the saying goes.

I don't think it's the driver's plan to extort extra money. For some reason you have fallen off their radar, or they're just really bad at their job. I've had similar issues and complaints to the publisher and district managers did little to rectify the problem. Praise and reward have worked better.

If you have any other type of reader you may be able to get your local newspaper as well. No need to walk out to the sidewalk to pick it up.

The CM is the one in charge of the delivery people.

Sounds to me like your initial complaint pissed off the delivery driver, and he or she is retaliating against you. This kind of crap shouldn't be happening.

Remember to deliver newspaper here!

I really do not want to keep calling to complain.

If your delivery guy is already pissed what is it gonna matter if you embarrass him a little bit?

For every day he skips you update the sign to say:

Day One:

Remember to deliver newspaper here!

I really do not want to keep calling to complain.

Day Two:

Remember to deliver newspaper here!

I really do not want to keep calling to complain.

I'd think that by the third day or so it is gonna get somebody's attention. If not, take pictures of the sign evey day and start posting them on a local Facebook account. Every day I'd give an update just to be a pain in somebody's behind. You paid for that subscription. By golly I'd want my damn paper if it was me.

SO do I but my neighbors would never forgive me. I asked the rep yesterday to have her manager call me. As of 2:45 Pm they have not done so. I have a list of their advertisers. I plan on writing a letter to the editor and anyone else I can find. I can not find any email or name of who is in charge of circulation. I've already informed them that I get Sunday's paper mostly for their ads. I plan on contacting each advertiser to inform them that I am cancelling my subscription to The Hartford Courant because of poor customer service. In this day and age where newspapers are going out of business and circulation is down and there are many other media outlets where people can now get their news, customer service should be the papers #1 priority.

I'll call them by the end of the day (although,I think it is a waste of time) I want the name of the district manager so I can plaster their name to my letters and remind them that this one particular person is why I am reluctantly cancelling my service. It was this manager who could not be bothered to address or fix the problem. I want their incompetence exposed.
