NOTE: If you're a female, you do NOT under ANY circumstances want to do karate without a sports bra. Trust me, I've heard the complaints.

There was an NBC standards rule that forbid the showing of the underside of a woman’s breast, a rule that caused Star Trek’s original costume designer William Ware Theiss to quip, “What do they think, moss grows there?”

From the tvtropes board...

  • The Making of Star Trek: The Original Series mentioned how showing this was absolutely forbidden by the network censors, and scripts mentioning costumes frequently got notes back warning against showing the area below the nipple. "Perhaps the censors think moss grows there."
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation: Tasha Yar in "The Naked Now".
  • One of the Dabo Girl's in Deep Space Nine.
  • A Star Trek: Voyager episode features the return of two Ferengi who have been stuck in the Delta Quadrant since their last appearance. The two swindlers make their appearance with a couple of slave girls, one of which shows this trope.
  • The Orion Slave Girls of Star Trek: Enterprise.

The "Theiss Titillation Theory"—which claims that "the degree to which a costume is considered sexy is directly proportional to how accident-prone it appears to be"—is named after him.

Just in case this gets alerted on as somehow being sexist or misogynistic, here is the Merriam-Webster definition:

Definition of BOOB
1: a stupid awkward person : simpleton
2: boor, philistine
— boob·ish \ˈbü-bish\ adjective
Origin of BOOB
short for booby
First Known Use: 1907
