(12,158 posts)thought it was confusing too. I didn't understand why the protagonist, Jake, thought that Melanie Griffith's character, Holly, had been the dancer he'd seen whom his "friend" Sam had told him was a woman named Gloria. After seeing Gloria dance, Jake met her briefly, and they even made out for a while in a tunnel, and Jake later saw Gloria murdered with a drill or something, so why...oh, never mind.

(12,158 posts)had identical birthmarks (or tattoos?), he realized that Holly must have been the window dancer hed seen whom his false friend had said was Gloria. I remember being confused about that part at first because Id been distracted by something during it, but Mr. froggy later explained it to me. Which Id forgotten about.
I totally get the movie now.

(36,827 posts)However, the implementation was 2nd rate. The screenplay goes overboard establishing the protagonist as a luzer with typical cliches (lost job, catches girlfriend cheating on same day). Most of the acting is 2nd rate (possibly due to 2nd rate direction). The cinematography is ho-hum. The basic story itself could have made for a great thriller, but there was more putting you to sleep than keeping you on the edge of the seat in the actual movie.

(11,833 posts)to Hitchcock. NYU film graduates like de Palma study representation, doubles, semiotics, the gaze, identity, voyeurism, auteur theory. I love the camera work, especially in the indoor elevator suspense scene. I love it 'cause for me it works as a movie about classic movies.
