I just saw a girl at the gas station wearing a black hoodie. It's in the upper 90s here.

I almost felt sorry for her. Was she so sun allergic she has to completely cover up? My dad was. He never wore short sleeves or shorts.

But a BLACK hoodie?

I felt bad because I think she sensed me staring at her.

Why are we so judgmental? I'm almost embarrassed I was shocked by what she was wearing.

I've known young women (teen/tween) who developed earlier than their peers, and were so frequently subjected to leers and inappropriate offensive comments (often from much older men) that they resorted to baggy and uncomfortable clothing even in the heat...

I injured one of my legs pretty badly when I was in junior high and it had scarred in a pretty ugly way. I felt awkward enough wearing shorts that I still rarely do, even though it's more or less since healed.

Add to that the rather nastier piles of body image issues people are subjected to these days, and yeah.

She's 13, but she looks like she's 16. My sister told me that she almost punched a high school Senior who tried to hit on my niece and I can't blame her one bit.

usually wear darker coloured clothing, because it promotes sweating, which promotes cooling. But the girl you saw may just have thrown it on to run an errand, or something.

has Asperger's. He will not wear anything but sweats unless coerced verrrrry strongly. The texture of the sweats seems to comfort him in a way. He works on the family farm when not in school, & still wears sweats, even if it's 100+ degree outside.

Dark-colored sweats, at that.

Some people have more fashion sense then common sense.

Or, as another person said, maybe she is a young woman who is self-conscious about her appearance.

she might work at a place where it gets too cold from the AC.

she probably just put it on by habit. i usually do this. i feel i'm missing something without the pocket sometimes where i keep my keys. especially if it's for something quick and i don't want to carry my bag. even with the bag i usually hold my keys or put them in my pocket.

did she have very fair skin that burns easily ? although in that case i think a loose fitting white top with long sleeves would work better.

the above comments about her body, whether it's because she feels she isn't attractive enough or maybe she gets too many comments from perverts .

i don't think it's really judgemental in a bad way. it's hot and you wonder how someone can stand it. you should have just kind of asked her in a lighhearted way whether she felt hot in that.

The women in the head to toe black look so hot - not in the sexy way but the heat and humidity way. Sometimes you see them sprawled out by the bus stop because it is too hot to stand up. It is not the burka but the full-on head to toe Saudi-type deal.

If my husband made me wear that I'd make him drive me around in an air conditioned car all day.

I will admit that I am curious when I see this type of thing, too.

In 105 heat, I saw a woman walking along the street in a yellow jacket. That happened here in NJ about a week ago.

It's perfectly natural to see what explanations others might have.

Cher

on edit: I also wanted to add that I think most people are curious about things like this. I am pretty much oblivious to the cold and when I go out in the winter, often do not wear a coat. I have a lot of people ask me if I'm cold and I respond that no, I'm not. Doesn't bother me any if they ask.

And there's this young woman wearing what looked like a lined windbreaker, with the friggin' hood up. It's a hundred friggin' degrees outside. And she's wearing a short dress, so I assume it's not a problem with exposure to the sun.

Women can get awfully self-conscious about their hair. At least I was. It was summer, too. But at least I wore lightweight caps, since it was hot.

But a black hoodie seems awfully hot, no matter what the reason. Unless she's still making a statement about the Trayvon Martin incident? A lot of people were wearing hoodies because of that.

Gentle Reader: Black hoodies are ONLY properly worn between Labor Day and Memorial Day. White or pastel hoodies are de rigueur from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
This young lady should be gently corrected as to her garb.

The only exception to this fashion rule is if the lady is a Goth. She may then wear black hoodies year-round, as long as her nails and lipstick match the hoodie.
