Lola Falana

Saturday's NY Times crossword had as the clue "One time Queen of Las Vegas". The answer is Lola Falana and she was a huge star. In the 1970s she was the highest paid female performer appearing in Las Vegas.

As an actress she learned fluent Italian to star in films in Italy. She was a regular on many TV shows (Hollywood Palace) and Broadway.

Bouts of Multiple Sclerosis ended her career and she now spends most of her time with her Lambs of God Ministry.

Thank you crossword for bringing back some nice memories.

You're right about Paula Kelly being the first (1969, although Falana was in Playboy in 1970). MiddleFingerMom Jul 2012 #5

I, too, remember that issue. Pretty shocking, back in the day.

I mostly remember Lola Falana from her inebriated appearances on The Tonight Show, which were quite amusing and invariably had Johnny Carson giving his classic WTF face to the camera.

Lola Falana was the first black woman to appear in a major market cosmetics ad campaign. She was the model for Faberge's "Tigress" perfume.
