The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSorry for the concerns... I'm right here.

Physically, I'm OK. The last time I was in the hospital, they discovered that my mechanical
heart valve replacement is leaking (some of the sutures holding it in place had loosened).
I talked to a surgeon last month about some experimental surgery. It's new here in the U.S.,
but they've been doing this stuff successfully in Europe for some time now -- miniature
clamshell clamps inserted and attached via the femoral artery rather than cracking open my
chest again (the damage done last year makes me not a prime candidate for that --
though it's still a backup option).
.
Trouble with that is that I haven't been able to connect with my surgeon's assistant.
The surgeon had said that she'd like to schedule me for Aug 13 or 14 -- but that she'd be
on vacation in Europe until then. I have to stop my blood-thinning med 3 or 4 days before
the surgery, so I'm running out of time for that to be in place by early next week.
.
Between that and the oppressive heat (we don't have A/C here and due to the monsoon
humidity, our swamp cooler only gets the temp down to about 85-88 degrees in the house),
my physical energy has been diminished somewhat.
.
And the continued lack of replies to the majority of my picture OP's has me very discouraged
and demotivated as far as posting my regular stuff. I go looking for new material like always,
but my heart ( ) just hasn't been in it.
.
But I've been OK and posting the occasional replies on DU to other people's stuff.

Glad to hear some details, though.

I was waiting... hoping to get MORE details, but I've been trying to email him
since Sunday and I called his line on Tuesday. The phone's volume was low and
the background noise pretty high (I was at the hospital for a test), but I would
swear his voicemail said, "I'm on the other line."
.
I HATE that bullshit line. Just say, "I'm not available right now." And if HE'S on
vacation, too -- just say, "I'll be out of the office until XXX."
.
In the meantime, it seems like someone who was pretty prompt about getting
back to me is just blowing me off.
.
The date is not THAT important to me, but this is not a surgeon actually based
at my hospital (I don't think). She's like a visiting specialist, so I don't know
what kind of priority they give her re: scheduling O.R.'s.
.
And I'd like to get this over and done with sooner than later. I haven't been
feeling very well or "energetic" (for lack of a better word) lately.

Normal monsoon stuff that probably won't really subside until September, maybe even
October.

One of the "silver linings" I was able to find in being hospitalized from May - August of
last year is that I was in blissful A/C 24/7.

Thank you.

(23,272 posts)I can completely relate. Some nights its all I can do to get in and get a shower and into bed.
Your posts are always funny, insightful and when I'm awake enough I try to make a response on at least one of them so you know how much it means to me.
But I'm so damn tired.
Keep the faith and know you have a lot of friends here even if some of us don't always post

... the actual "support" of what I do WHEN I'm doing it has been seriously
lacking. It's kinda like a musician who plays his heart out and in response...
dead silence ("but we all love what you're doing" . The views in themselves
don't give me any feedback on how I'm doing (except a "meh" response).
.
I don't know how MANY times I've tried to tell people here that it's extremely
discouraging and disheartening. And it's finally been hitting me really hard -- until
now I always enjoyed LOOKING for more material, whether I was even going to
use it or not. It's cumulative... and I seem to have reached my breaking point.

(68,644 posts)Speaking of feedback....
There are a number of blood thinning meds.
I'd be very concerned for you if one of yours is Coumadin (Warfarin), as my father was on it for years with dire consequences.
I shifted him to aspirin four years ago, all the side effects are gone and he's still with us.
Knock wood.
MiddleFingerMom

... that the med be Coumadin and that it will be for the rest of my life.
.
I think it's RELATIVELY safe as long as the blood levels are kept within certain
parameters (something I really work at doing and get checked every week or
two).
.
.
.
But I will check. I'd RATHER have something else, if it's possible.

Thanks.

(2,682 posts)just not very many replies. Please be kind to us -- there isn't always something that can be said in response to your very witty and interesting posts. I'd be worried when the "views" numbers dwindle. I also get few replies to my posts but they serve more as an opportunity to say something rather than a counting of replies. Be assured, your work is completely appreciated and I, along with many others, I'm sure, look for your posts before reading the others. Take care of yourself in that hot weather!!!
MiddleFingerMom

... but with all those (admitted) viewers, you'd think a few of them would. There's
a lot of bright, witty people on DU. I see SOME posts about the most inane of
subject matters that get plenty of responses.

I'm kinda hibernating as much as possible during the heat, but I do have to go out
sometimes and there's not much I can do to avoid the heat. I walk pretty slowly
(which increases my time in the direct sunlight - which can be literally brutal out
here) and shade in town is pretty much minimal, if present at all.
.
.
.
I come home sometimes feeling like I've put a full day in the fields at harvest time
(and I seriously haven't "done" much at all).

We used to throw an annual weekend-long "Clam Orgy" every year when they went on sale,
buying a coupla THOUSAND of them. Saturday would be elbow-deep in tubs of melted butter
steamers and Sunday would be enormous stockpots of both Manhattan and New York clam
chowder.
.
Exorbitant amounts of keg beer before, during and after the whole shebang!!!
.
.
.
After these experiences, I was never able to downscale and order a simple, measly DOZEN
clams in a restaurant again.

The heat gets to me, grew up in that SacredTomato Valley in Calafia, 108-113 DRY. Two decades plus in Minnesota's HUMIDITY. BUT the last two years here in N. Arkansas-had never actually had "heat related illness", there seems to be a cumulative impact, noticed trying to become nocturnal, but the rest of the world is sleeping and prefers not to be disturbed. My favorite doc once told me that Aging is not for cowards! (its true)
Hope you get a hold of the person, that you get that tune-up done.
AND that you get back to being YOU, so those of us who need/depend upon particular folks resume whatever this normalacy is called.

(30,885 posts)...I've gravitated away from the Lounge for no specific reason. On one level, I guess it's because life has been very, very heavy lately and my heart also hasn't been in the kind of stuff I used to post there on a seven day a week basis. That means I don't respond to your stuff the way I used to because on most days I don't even see it. I am sure that the Lounge Lizards still greatly appreciate what you do, I just haven't felt very lizard-y lately. I've been posting the overwhelming majority of my stuff in GD.
So the vibes are still out there for you, including from me, even though they may not manifest themselves in the form of give-and-take on the posting front. Be well, be happy, know that you have friends...even in their silence.
