(6,581 posts)And the first girl I was really interested in in any kind of serious way, we were both brand spanking new freshmen at Michigan State, lived in the same dorm, same floor. It didn't work out long term.
Damn, I'm either on a funky nostalgia ride or way too much caffeine, but I would have done some things differently if I had the chance.
The other woman I was really kind of interested in, well, I can't think of a theme song for that time period in my life, late 90's. Hmmm.

(6,581 posts)I like them both. And she's a hometown girl here in Detroit Metro.
I do agree with his comment, what little I heard of her 2012 release was pretty sad, IMHO.

(95,337 posts)When Lady GaGa has 30 years of recording history then you can compare her to Madonna.
I wouldn't think to compare some upstart piano playing songwriter as 'The Next Elton John'. Elton John has been doing this for decades and amazingly well.
And btw, when was the last great album released by Elton John that wasn't connected to a movie?
Although the last super selling great album was 'Ray of Light' (1998), 'Confessions on a Dance Floor' (2005) was an awesome album. BTW, MDNA did get 3.5 stars (out of 5) from Rolling Stone Magazine and general positive reviews even if it wasn't a blockbuster like earlier albums.
To be honest this whole 'Madonna Sucks' from Elton John is nothing more than him being a sore loser. Elton John and Madonna were both up for 'Best Original Song' at the Golden Globes. Madonna had directed a movie called 'W/E' (which was panned by the critics) but her song beat out a song that that Elton John had done for some kiddie flick. (btw Madonna's song was not eligible for Oscars because it was the closing credit song, something the Oscars won't consider for Best Song nomination). Thing is this, John's tirade started after Madonna won that Oscar and honestly, just came across as a sore loser.
Don't get me wrong, Elton John is very talented and I've even seen him twice in concert. But his tirades are a bit annoying.

Prior to that, the Taupin/John team had produced some real rockers with weighty lyrics.
.
.
.
I saw him in 1970 or '71... my first concert that I got to go go myself (well, with 3 buddies).
Before that, MiddleFingerMomMom took me to see Me and Dem Guys and I spent the entire
show telepathically SHOUTING at everyone in the joint, "I AM NOT HERE WITH MY MOTHER!!!
I AM NOT HERE WITH MY MOTHER!!! I AM NOT HERE WITH MY MOTHER!!!
.
This was when his band was a power trio of bass, drums and piano. He opened the show
by himself, dressed in white sequined top hat and tails. He played "Your Song", Tiny Dancer"
and one other. Then the other two guys came out, he threw off the hat and tuxedo coat,
now simply in jeans, a white t-shirt and suspenders.
.
They rocked the fucking house!!!
.
.
.
My favorite album of his is a little-known live one simply titled "11-17-70", for the date that
it was broadcast and recorded live from a New York radio station. He was 23 years old at
the time.
.
One of my favorites of his is the first video (from that performance), "Burn Down the Mission" --
which is the first part of a three-song medley at the end. His closer, The Beatles' "Get Back"
is worth looking for on YouTube -- it's there.
.
The second video is my other favorite of his... a cover of The Rolling Stones, "Honky Tonk
Women" (also on that album but not YouTube, so I've included a somewhat lesser version
from five days earlier).

Great song. I love Sondheim.

(14,061 posts)I have the DVD. She was with a group of women (including Audra McDonald, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone) who sang some of his great lead songs -- "Not a Day Goes By," "The Glamorous Life," "Losing My Mind," and a few others. Just fantastic. Elaine stole the show. She is a treasure.
I love Sondheim, too -- I have a lot of soundtracks on my iPod.

(14,549 posts)Very powerful song -- spiritual lyrics and soaring, gospel-esque music.
Elton John's voice is about a 5 but what he does with it is at least a 9. Great concert performer too btw.
