Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsAre there certain actors that you refuse to see in any movie?
Ones that are deal-breakers. If they are involved in the project, you rule that movie out. They kill the possibility of a good movie.
Another thread on Chuck Norris started me thinking about this.
Obvious ones for me are Tom Cruise, and Adam Sandler. If I never see another film with either in my life .....
Some less obvious: Nicole Kidman. She is a supposedly great actress who leaves me cold in any role she plays. I simply have no interest.
Who are the performers that you refuse to see?

(23,340 posts)Odin2005
(53,521 posts)It is just that a lot of people that ARE snobbish types tend to bring up "poor character development" when criticizing a movie or novel and yet at the same time forget that the obsession with realistic characters is a uniquely modern Western affectation that is only about 500 years old. The characters of the epic stories of many societies are quite cookie-cutter, as are the characters in the plays of Sophocles and Aristophanes. This is because in those societies the symbolism and the plot themes are more important than the characters in the stores, the characters are "props" to illustrate ideas and principles. Avatar is in that vein.
The movie's use of the term "Unobtainium" is Cameron's shout-out to the sci-fi community, who invented the term long before to describe a certain type of space opera techno-babble.

(5,352 posts)I was all excited to find out that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) was going to be in a mainstream American movie, then my hopes were dashed when I found out Julia Roberts is playing his cousin. Margo Martindale (recently Mags Bennett on Justified) will be playing his mother, though, so I might give it a shot, anyway.
Another one I can't stand is Kevin Costner. Terrible. Just terrible.
Still Blue in PDX
(1,999 posts)Maybe being part of a brilliant ensemble will draw a good performance out of Julia Roberts, or at least perhaps she will play a smallish part. Benedict Cumberbatch in the plus column is a strong incentive to break the No-Roberts rule. I'll just wait for the movie to hit the Red Cross DVD library and watch while donating platelets so the time won't be a total waste. If she is as bad as she usually is I can doze through her scenes.
I agree with you on Kevin Costner, too.

Reagan is another one, but none of his sparse movie collection would be worth watching anyway.
So someone upthread stated that they wouldn't boycott an actor based on his/her politics: well, I sure would! No John Voight, Chuck Norris, Patricia Heaton, Kelsey Grammer, Charlton Heston et al for me.
Although, I'll give Eastwood a pass. He's pretty damn awesome, and he has no prob working with Sean Penn and the like.

(46,179 posts)There are a lot of movies I won't see, regardless of who acted in them. I see 3-4 movies a year, if that, and I'm picky. I won't give up 2 hours or more of my time, captive in a chair, for anything I don't think will be worth it.
I could care less about the actors. I don't pick movies to see based on who is acting, but on plot.

(15,164 posts)I've become very disillusioned with the quality, depth and even the acting in Hollywood theatrical releases over the past decade and the last time I remember going to a cinema was about five or six years ago.
I don't have deal-breakers in terms of there being movies I won't see on principle because a certain actor or actress is in it. Even the crappiest most horrible actors or actresses can occasionally appear in good movies and TV show
In terms of the political views of certain actors and actresses, I feel that boycotting a whole show or movie because of one actor or actress -even if she is the main actor or actress -can be potentially unfair when you take into account the other cast on the show who may not share those views. I used to be like that -for example I used to boycott "Everybody Loves Raymond" because of Patricia Heaton. But then I read about Peter Boyle and his lifelong liberal activism. If I boycott the show because of Patricia Heaton, I am also in effect boycotting him as well. Similarly, if I boycott "Frasier" because of Kelsey Grammar and his right wing nutiness, I am also boycotting David Hyde Pierce -whom I've heard is very liberal. Should I boycott "Happy Days" because of right-wing tool Scott Baio despite the fact that Henry Winkler and Ron Howard are great liberals? The same principle more or less applies to movies. Should I boycott "It's a Wonderful Life" because James Stewart was a Republican and should I boycott to "To Kill A Mockingbird" because Robert Duvall is a conservative right wing Republican? So that's my difficulty with boycotting actors/actresses on principle because of their political views
That having been said, are there actors and actresses whom I don't like and whose movies I am more than likely than not to avoid because they are in them (unless I can be persuaded otherwise)? Yes definitely....
Those who come to mind are
-Kate Bosworth
-Will Ferrell
-Adam Sandler
-Rob Schneider
-Tom Cruise (although I liked some of his earlier movies and liked him as an actor back when he was married to Nicole Kidman)

(54,065 posts)Adam Sandler is cloying. Jean-Claude Van Damme used to be so bad it was funny; now he's so bad it's bad. Most Bill Murray comedies are annoying, but when he's got the right director, he can be devastating. I agree about Nicole Kidman.

(9,527 posts)A lot of actors/actresses can be at least good in the right role. Stallone has the original Rocky and Rambo movies and Copland, Arnold has the first two Terminators, Keanu Reeves has the Bill and Ted movies etc.
I find that the director and script matter more than the actual actor. It's why I like Denzel Washington so much more in Training Day than in most of his other movies.

(21,925 posts)For me he's not a box office draw and I don't like his acting. But I think some of his films are good in spite of him. Adam Sandler is occasionally amusing but most of his films are dull and would be dull with anyone in the starring role (the main problem is the choice of material). I like Nicole Kidman or at least I don't find her a reason not to watch one of the films in which she appears. John Travolta and Van Damme are almost in the category of people I will not watch but I would probably watch at least once. Among old timers, Doris Day is someone whose films I watch because they can be good (The Man who Knew Too Much) but if I had a choice I'd prefer someone else in the role because her personality is absolutely repellent to me.
But I think the only one I intentionally avoid is Angelina Jolie. She's a fine actress and chooses good material in which to appear. There's just something about her personality that very much gets on my nerves like no one else and I don't know why.
