Weird little game I came up with, but kind of fun.
This will involve both some simple math AND a couple of the biggest hits from America's most successful Punk Pop band, Green Day. How can this miss?
You know I love hanging with Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre anyway!
And a peculiarity of circumstance comes into play: the street I live on is EXACTLY a quarter mile long from end to end, almost to the foot. So it's a convenient pre-measured distance.
The combined track of 'Holiday' and 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' from Green Day's mega-successful, 2005 Grammy Award Winning Best Rock Album, 'American Idiot' is exactly 8:13 long on the mp3 download version.
My little game. If I start EXACTLY on my corner dead center on the line, hit the play button for Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams AND I walk at my good fast-normal fitness walking speed, I can go to the far end, touch the street sign pole (hey, that's in the official rule book!), and be back to my EXACT starting as the few very final notes play on my MP3.
Another key provision in the official rule book of Denninimi's Fitness Challenge -- Denninmi MUST sing along, as loudly as possible, to all of the lyrics. Because, you know, I can't sing at all, I wouldn't be fit to the on the reject reel from the American Idol reject show. I do this because, hey, if all of my neighbors think I'm nuts, then they won't mess with Denninmi anymore, now will they? Who doesn't need a bit of a reputation as a badass, right? Ok, well maybe badass isn't quite the right word here, but we'll go with it.
OK, actually, I do sing along because I'm also trying to build lung capacity, and singing out loud while exercising seems to be a really good way to do that. And I don't care what the neighbors think. I have some issues with blood oxygen levels at certain times of day due to something else medical that is currently untreated (but honest, I promise to get back in my now-former and soon to be current pulmonologist's good graces real soon). And my 40 plus pound overweight middle aged body just needs the challenge.
Oh, and just to make sure I really cement my neighborhood image as completely nuts, this exercise really must be done either at around 10:00 at night, or sometime between 4:30 and 6:00 in the morning.
So, that is one half mile in 8:13. Eight minutes and thirteen seconds is 8.2166667 expressed in decimal form. Converted to hours, that is 0.13694444444 hours. One half mile in 0.1369444444 hours is a walking rate of : 3.651115 miles per hour. (Damn, I hope I did that math right, or won't I look stupid? OK, MORE STUPID!)
What is a good fitness walking speed? Read this except:
Average Walking Speed for Fitness Walkers
What is a good average walking speed for fitness walking? The answer depends on a few factors, such as your age, fitness level, leg length, terrain (flat or hilly) and gender (research has shown that men walk faster than women).
In general, the average walking speed is between 3.0 3.5 miles per hour which means you can walk one mile in 17 to 20 minutes.

So, Denninmi isn't doing too bad for a fat, middle aged, out of shape dude after all!
