it's a biz trip, and only 2 weeks into a new job...do you think my employers would understand me not wanting to put myself in harm's way?

Original subject line: "Go ahead and go. Just stay in the French Quarter, upper floor. I liked the Royal Sonesta."
Went there twice last year, stayed the first time at the Royal Sonesta.
The second time stayed at an Embassy Suites on Julia, there's an Emeril a block away, yum!
You can tell how high the water got with Katrina.
You'll be fine.

(41,990 posts)Folks down there take this shit seriously, and as a part of life. People are going to be home, boarding up and stocking up on beer and liquor. Ask the hotel too. They can keep you informed.
Personally, I'd postpone.
Keep us posted if you do go, and if you have electricity.

http://www.nola.com/hurricane/index.ssf/2012/08/new_orleans_mayor_mitch_landri.html
With Tropical Storm Isaac expected to strengthen, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has declared a state of emergency and urged residents to begin preparing their homes as shelters through the storm. Landrieu said the storm is moving along at about 16 miles an hour, and if it stays at that pace, it could reach the city in the next 34 hours, putting it ashore late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Landrieu emphasized that there will be no shelters of last resort, so people need to be prepared to evacuate, should it come to that.
.
.
The airport will likely shut down when winds hit around 40 miles an hour, but Landrieu said that will be the airlines' call.
Landrieu pressed residents to prepare to live, possibly for days, without water or power. If an evacuation is called, he said staying is a bad decision.
"You're making a mistake," he said. If you're called upon to leave, then leave.

I won't post a pic, I'm sure you know what I mean.
On the bright side, residents are the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of working with.

(146,218 posts)I can't believe this is happening on the anniversary. The anniversary is always hard enough.
While I don't wish a hurricane on anyone, I can't help this pleading in my heart that it veers away.
I was just corresponding with someone from Florida and I gave a generic "stay safe" sign off to my email. They replied "I am hoping the storm comes right to me. Hopefully, the eyewall will pass over so I can get some nice photos/video. Us Florida boys love them; hurricanes (if not to strong) are a blast! It's like camping for a week! Ok, take care."
Intense storms are fascinating for a lot of people. That does not mean anybody wishes harm to anyone or to offend anyone who has been harmed or traumatized by them. Nature is not all fluffy and gentle, the dangerous parts are as interesting to me as the benign parts.

(41,990 posts)She says things are pretty much okay, a lot of waiting and the usual prep. I'm worried for the coast. That surge can carry across 90 and put shit in your yard that you wouldn't believe. But you know that.
Btw are you in the city? Or are you watching from afar like I am? It's no fun either.

(146,218 posts)Left shortly after Katrina and never returned. My sister and both of my sons are there right now and haven't heard from them yet.
And, yes, the yearly scares made many complacent. This will most likely be nothing, as it generally is.
