Last night I watched one of those "World's Dumbest" shows on TruTV, where D-list "celebrities" (Danny Bonaduce, Tonya Harding, Daniel Baldwin, Todd Bridges) riff on clips, such as one for a special trimmer made especially for goatees.
One of them said something like "Nothing says 'I am a douche' more than this product."
I don;t really care of people think I'm a douche, but my beard just doesn't grow in on my cheeks, period. So I'm growing a goat. My donor star's expired so the poll I wanted to post isn't gonna happen, but what are your thoughts...does a goatee REALLY seal a guy's fate as a douchebag?

(1,485 posts)most of the rednecks in my area choose a bald head and a goatee. They drive big trucks. They love their coon-huntin' dogs, they look askance at all others. It is a cliche about bald overweight folks using a goat to compensate.
They love their dogs, but keep them caged 24/7. Pricks.
You are not a douche for having a goat.

(6,581 posts)People often make snap judgments base on appearance, but that doesn't make them valid.
You certainly don't sound like a douche to me, based on what I know of you from your posts. All a goatee says to me about a guy is that he is perhaps more daring in his fashion/style choices than I am.
I actually had kind of a strange conversation about many things a week or so ago with my mother, who is 87, and at one point, I brought up the issue of snap judgements/first impressions/stereotypes based on appearance. And, I picked a photo of someone from an online image gallery and showed it to her. This is the photo I chose and showed to her:
And I asked her to do this little exercise -- tell me about this person? What kind of person would this be? What would he do in life? Would he be a success? Would he be a productive member of society? Would he be a good person?
Her answers were kind of telling, I thought, because they showed a lot of prejudice, probably generational, based solely on the image. Without having a clue who the man is, she said that the person depicted was probably a criminal or drug addict, and she thought he could possibly be someone "famous" (she meant infamous) for doing some horrific act or crime. She said he was probably a lazy person, dangerous, untrustworthy, someone who would probably rob or steal or rape, and was probably in prison.
The man in the photo is, of course, Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer/songwriter of one of my very favorite bands, Green Day, one of the most honored punk bands ever. Among other things, Armstrong is a very dedicated Democrat and has campaigned for Gore, Kerry, and Obama as well as for candidates in California races. Hardly lazy, he has written or co-written numerous songs for multiple albums as well as one Broadway musical, with the second in the pipeline.
So, no, I a say appearance is superficial, it's personality that matters.

(5,604 posts)Same thing with piercings, tattoos, whatever clothing is all the rage. Trying to look like a non-conformist is the new manufactured norm. But if you would have worn a goatee in the preppy 1980s or in the future when the fad has passed, then rock it.

I can't stand goatees - they are the ugliest of all beads, and I dislike beards altogether. Goatees make guys look like goats.
I don't know that goatees instantly turn people into douchebags. But they are purely unattractive.

(19,375 posts)Basic shape (moustache connected, no long points along the jaw, etc.) and I keep it trimmed very short.
Not fond of true goatees, and I find that most of the guys I run into sporting a patch of hair on the tip of their chins lean to the douche side, but your mileage may vary.

Thus, the answer to your question is "yes". QED.

VanDykes, OTOH balance out the facial hair look. A well trimmed VanDyke looks great, much better than a full beard.
IMO, the only thing worse that a goatee is the deliberate stubble look.
