(25,862 posts)from my local shelter. The shelter vet was brutally honest, and told me, she might live 2 years, she might live 2 months. I was okay with that, and okay with needing a special diet for this cat.
I named her Fiona (she had some other bizarre name that started with an F, and I went with Fiona) and she settled in very quickly. I'm pretty sure her earlier human was an older woman like me.
Sadly, she was with me only three and a half weeks. Not very long. But I'm so glad she got to have those final weeks with me, not in the shelter. When I brought her to them to be euthanized, as it was obvious that was needed, they did not charge me for the euthanization, probably because I'd had her such a short time. I was appreciative. I did pay for her cremation and have her ashes brought back to me.
My current cats are Tatiana, who I got from that very same shelter a month or so after Fiona. Last year, a neighborhood cat, Tony, was spending a lot of time with me. About two months ago I had a knock on the door, and Tony's human parents were holding him and told me they were moving, their new place didn't allow cats, and could I take him? Well, of course! Aside from how wonderful Tony is, he and Tatiana get on incredibly well, and I know that when I'll be making various trips out of town, they will be quite happy being the two of them.
