As to sopranos: Joni Mitchell, who has almost exactly the same vocal register as Karen, but she tends to use the high end, whereas Karen emphasizes the basement.
Annie Haslam, of Renaissance, has a 6-octave register, and you gotta hear her to believe her. This would be a good start:
As to jazz stylists, it's hard to pick between Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. I wouldn't want to live on the difference, but Ella and Satchmo together are just great. But Sarah is Sassy.

(36,458 posts)in an informal recording session for Richard, in session bassist Joe Osborn's garage studio, the tag-along Karen sat in and played a little drums and sang a bit. Joe Osborn liked what he heard and passed the tape on to Herb Alpert. Alpert's buddy, producer, Lou Adler heard the demo and it was off to the races.
Fast forward a bit, in a recording studio, session drummer extraordinaire Hal Blaine liked what he heard but suggested Karen sing an octave lower. This was met with consternation from her controlling mother, but later in the session she did drop it an octave lower.... and the rest is history
Karen later went on to say, "The money is in the basement".
I guess it goes without saying, Joe Osborn played bass on all her recordings

She came to my attention when I saw her on the Grammys performing Sunny Came Home (I'd never heard it before)- For that song, she won both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Hearing her performance on the Grammys led me to listen to all of her albums, and, my god, what a talent. She writes amazing songs. She's a true wordsmith with wonderful musical talent.
A couple of my favorite songs are Summer Dress and Shotgun Down the Avalanche - and Venetian Blue, which she wrote after seeing Brokeback Mountain.

(182,868 posts)I loved listening to her. Mid 80s so I hadnt decided a useful major other than Literature. I didnt have time or interest to actually read the books so my papers were back/side stories of the works. Tequila with Emily Dickinson was one of them.
One of my rich uncles rented some suites in Duck NC. Outerbanks. On the beach. Blazing hot summer day. My brother and I went down to the beach with a butt-ton of beer, a boombox (I guess), and tapes. We spent hours down there totally uncovered from the sun listening to REM 10,000 Maniacs The dBs probably some Steely Dan Traffic Sade etc. I wouldnt say we were pounding beers - it was an effortless flow of beers. A lot of beer. Im sure we were both baked. We worked the world out between us. Thats pretty much where we still are today. Based on that day.
It was one of the most beautiful days of my life.
When we got back up to the suite my aunt said we could see you all. You guys drank a LOT of beer. We did.
Pappaw - Johnnie - was there. He laughed and said something about how we had a day he never was able to have. He was injured in the Battle of the Bulge and spent two years at the Army hospital at the Greenbrier. Tough life. Read voluminously.
One of the best days of my life.

One of my undergrad degrees was Spanish, and I went to Camelot Music in the mall (this is really dating me) to look at their woefully small Spanish music section and found, "Entre a Mi Mundo." I had never heard of her, but I figured, "Eh, well, she's very pretty so at least I'll have a nice cassette cover." Little did I know I had picked up a tape of someone who would become one of the biggest Tejano stars ever. I left a college event that I had traveled 200 miles to when I bought a paper and saw she had been murdered because it bummed me out so much.
