(38,322 posts)Commercials automatically make any streaming service a non-starter for me. My wife is even less tolerant of television commercials than I am.
We quit all advertising supported television many years ago. We have no broadcast, no cable, no satellite television in our home.
We usually subscribe to two or three no-commercial streaming services at a time.
In the last couple of months we've mostly been watching Netflix, but that changes.
I'm not entirely joking when I say, "traditional television created Trump, traditional television must die!"
We haven't tried Hulu or Peacock yet. Maybe we'll get around to them someday, maybe not.

(86 posts)As I get older (well into my 50s now) the crap they push just seems crappier. And youre absolutely correct about the paradox that brought us the asshat.
With respect to what can be good entertainment versus satisfactory entertainment is the difference between what youre looking for and what youre offered for free or for a subscription. That difference is wholly dependent upon how freely youre willing to open-up your checkbook. Sounds like neither of us very willing to do that. To me, a subscription is a trap that Im not willing to endure.
I found the subscriptions offer marginally better programming while stealing my money; Im happy by entertaining myself and using free services to pass the time while Im doing something else; paying for it doesnt seem to equate to greater utility for me, but Im a minimalist at heart and by nature.
Perhaps others have had a different experiences?
Oh, crap. Ive become an economist
On the other hand, I have discreet interests: aeronautics, spaceflight, engineering, Open Courseware, etc; which are all commercial and free, and help me become more robust as a teacher, leader and someone whose legit exhausted at the end of a 14 hour day.
You do you. Diversify. Switch between channels. Avoid YouTube (but I have my fave YT things revolving around rocketry, spaceflight, jet engine rebuilds, precision machining, etc).
Im sure I was no help whatsoever, but I seemed to have opened my digital mouth. For whatever thats worth.
Honestly, a night with NPR is a good night. Reliable, consistent; at midnight until 04:00 I get BBC. Its golden.
Best, bro!

(102,331 posts)on both for the next year. Peacock was included in my COMCAST WIFI access as a long-term 'loyalty" perk. I probably have watched things on Peacock in the past more... The one advantage of streaming services is you can bump back and forth. And if you are in an area that gets a lot of OTA access via simple antennae then maybe you don't need the live tv access. Right now, too many geographic obstructions for me.

Its taking some time to get used to the channel selection, but at least Im done with Speculum.

(4,546 posts)We have had Hulu Live for about 2 years now and love it! We especially love that we can watch MSNBC live with it, and there's so much more, too. We subscribe to a few other streamers as well and it's still much less than cable. Video and audio quality are much better, too!

(175 posts)it depends on what and how you consume entertainment media. The only reason I have Peacock is for English Premier League football (that's REAL football, not American rules rugby). I tend to watch each and every match. it's the best football in the world right now. Were ESPN+ or Paramount+ or ANYONE else to be awarded the next EPL contract, I'd drop Peacock in a heartbeat. So have a look at what they offer and compare it to what you like.
Remember, you can always change your mind and cancel. However, if you subscribe with the cheaper annual rate (for Peacock, I'm not clear on whether Hulu is available that way), you want to remember A) when your sub is up, and B) how to turn it off. Neither takes a degree in rocket science, but you want to have that info bookmarked, saved in email or written down - or perhaps some combination thereof.

(22,270 posts)What I like most is the ability to catch up on their current schedule when I need to. I do not always remember to go to NBC and watch programming as it is broadcast, I do not have the tools I need for recording, so if I miss an episode or two I can go over to Peacock and catch up. I used to be able to do this on Hulu but when Peacock started up no new products were available on Hulu
I got Hulu for Handmaid's Tale. Hulu has some really great original programming, and a number of FX series are on Hulu.

(86 posts)Youre always going to have some sort of commercial for free streaming with a limited selection of local media, junk movies and network TV episodics. I use my Roku, Sling and Peacock, but it depends on what youre into and what each platform provides and when. When I get home from work and its dead silent in the house Ill stream local news as background comfort noise as I decompress using Sling, they have interesting movies, too but they dont rotate new media in very often. Peacock is good for OG stuff like COPS but the quality is low.
Best advice I can give is to diversify like youre investing: have a number of choices to play with; short-, mid-, long-term. Sometimes youre going to be stuck with 4 minutes of bumper music while your local station is on commercial break (it gets monotonous). I always have a deck of cards to play with while Im forced to listen to the seemingly endless din of commercial breaks in-between.
I refuse to pay money for anything I dont find of real utility, so for my marginal use and appreciation (by myself) of a free service the consequence of enduring 4 minutes of junk corporate pop is acceptable to me. Its just background noise. Im usually doing something else anyway.
Plus-side: its still free and I get to catch-up on National and local news while Im pleasantly puttering about the house and then watch a movie as I simultaneously surf the web and peacefully fall asleep.
And, cards betwixt the commercial madness.
Make your own rules despite limited options.

But I can tell, right off the bat, that I like you no matter if you didnt like my response.
Anyone named Floyd is good in my book. (Thinking of the movies 2001 and 2010 (Kubrick is my man!) which are both free to stream on Sling right now, two of my all-time favorites!) I will heretofore refer to you as doctor Floyd. Also, Star Trek 1 and The Wrath of Kahn are playing, too! (Not sure if either platform uses online metrics to serve you with suggestions, but thats what I get).
I think I might relax and stream both movies since I have the next three days off.

(27,159 posts)HULU: I love it because it has What We Do in the Shadows, and lots of good anime options. Also, it has the few FOX shows I watch: Bob's Burgers, Krapopolis, and Animal Control. It also has "The Bear" which I'm watching at my husband's insistence that I will eventually love it.
PEACOCK: We have because my husband is really into cycling (Tour de France, and all the others). I love it for The Amber Ruffin Show, and right now I'm really in to "Kolchak the Night Stalker". My husband also likes to watch Saturday Night Live. I only watch the opening sketch, Weekend Update, and the musical guest if I'm a fan. Poker Face is an excellent Peacock show, as well. If there are old NBC shows you like (like Kolchak) this is the place to find them.
I'd recommend looking over the catalog of what each has, and adding up your "must-haves" for each, and see which one comes out ahead! But like I said, I like having both!
