The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm having major back surgery tomorrow
And I would love any positive vibes, energy, thoughts or prayers to help me through these next two months especially.
This will be my fourth operation on my lumbar spine since September of '21.
The system doesn't make things easy if you're poor, Medicaid ran me around with denials since last fall and I just got the final approval Monday.
I love the DU members, they're valuable opinions, the vast knowledge I've gained here and your forgiveness and instruction with my occasional demonstrations of naivety or ignorance. You all have been my source for news, laughs, tears, and every other emotion imaginable.

(10,258 posts)Ive had four lumbar surgeries. Mostly gone well with a couple complications but a car wreck a few years ago set me back. Most recently I had a surgery at the transition above the lumbar where the bone growth from the fusion was pushing against my spinal cord had to be trimmed. That was fairly minor compared to all the lumbar fusions. I dont know if methods have improved or what but they do seem to get easier.

(328 posts)Incision was huge! 8 inches.
Don't skimp on the pain pills. Try to get dilaudid for the first week, oxycodone the next weeks.
All that bruising, swelling, and trauma took a good week to subside.
Took about three weeks for pain to minimize to a pinpoint.
Good luck, use a walker if you have one, but you'll be mostly horizontal for the first 2 weeks. You'll get stoved up so move as much as you can. If you have several places to recline, use them all so you change positions often.
You have probably heard this all before if you have had back surgery before.
Hope this is helpful.

(29,723 posts)pain is incalculable. It didn't solve the original problem of a surgeon who gave me a short and long leg in hip replacement surgery that made the second spinal surgery necessary. I'm still peg leg pete.
Just remember BLT...no bending, no lifting, no twisting. You'll be fine.
