I almost died on my bike yesterday!

No, not from an oncoming car or a big wipeout.

I rode with the bike club from the health club I joined. 15 miles. Granted, I have been doing long rides, up to 30 miles, but these riders go quite a bit faster than my average speed. They are all seasoned athletes, a number of them do triathlons. I kept up for most of the 15 miles, but had a hard time with the last 2 or 3 miles. Also harder because a good portion of the route was off-pavement on a fine gravel trail surface, with some seriously muddy spots.

When we got back, I thought I was going to die!

But hey, at least I did it! Two more rides this season, I am going to try to man up and tough them out.

No sugars, very little simple carbs like rice, potatoes, flour/bread, corn, dried beans, etc.

They want me to do a diet that is very high in protein, chicken, fish, seafood, and high in low carb vegetables and a few fruits.

So I'm doing my best to comply.

Then bring them back slowly, things with a lower glycemic index first, like quinoa pasta and taro in place of semolina pasta and potatoes.

Two of the best uses are in crock-pot chili and as a thickener for soups. It cooks quickly and it's easy to tell when it's done because of all the little curly casing strands after the rest of it has turned to mush. I keep it in a large mason jar on top of the fridge for easy access. And as far as I know, quinoa and amaranth are the only two grains that contain a complete compliment of essential proteins.

I average between 17-18 mph most of the time and at my age that number ain't goin' up. I never really did like riding with bike clubs that much. Everyone is either faster or slower than I am. So I do most of my riding alone. I like it better that way anyhow.

Before the spring, I was a 2 mile a day each way commuter. Moved to Olympia, joined the bike club, and started going out on the "Leisure Rides" every Sunday. Did about 12 miles that first day, and thought I would die. Eventually did longer and longer rides. In September, I did a 68 mile ride. Even as a teenager, I never did anything like that.

That is really awesome. I did 30 that one day a couple weeks back and could probably done another 10 but hit the time wall, if I didn't get home and do something useful it would have been the firing squad for me!

Next year!
