Professions we love....to hate

I submit for approval the Auto Mechanic.

One shop told me my truck was about ready to have a wheel fall off and needed $800+ in repairs to keep it safe. The next spot said it was just a tire that was in need of replacement and the other repairs weren't too urgent. Then they quote a $500 front end brake job and say that if I delay, it will only cost more when the brakes fail.

Shop #1 $800 repair not even addressing the tire
Shop #2 $500 brakes and $380 for two tires (because you cant buy one at a time, or shouldn't)

Actual needed repairs: a new tire and a brake inspection from someone who isnt trying to screw me over.

Who else do you have no use for?

...tells one of the three most often used lies:
1) Your check is in the mail.
2) Of course I'll respect you in the morning.
3) I'm from the government and I'm here to help you.

Well, mostly #s 1 and 3 but you get the idea.

I am and mechanics try to rip me off all the time. Seriously, I always have a man take my car in when I need repairs otherwise they'll try to screw me over. I took my car to a garage and got an $750 estimate on what needed done My boyfriend took this same car to the same garage and he got a $350 estimate what needed done. Sad but true

I dont fall for the ol tricks they use to upsell. After getting their estimates, I'm never using them again. You'd think they see that overblown estimates have a tendency to walk out more than fair estimates...unless everyone else is stupid and falls for it. All you have to do is call around to other shops and ask how much they charge for ___.

Then they have another kid and suddenly you've got periodontal problems and this crown needs to be replaced - except it's not cracked, just a bit of porcelain off the side that can be dealt with with dental floss. And Mrs GoS suddenly has periodontal problems as well..
Makes you go - hmmmmm?

Very hard for me to avoid the proverbial "throwing out the baby with the bathwater" in my somewhat pathological dislike of "suits".

Known him since I was a little kid and he was friends with my dad. Absolutely trustworthy, knows what he's doing and often shows me what he's talking about on the car if that's possible and goes the extra extra mile to get to my car even before other clients ahead of me, lets me use his own car if I have to leave mine overnight, skimps on the bill where he can or outright pretends he did no work at all so there is no bill, etc. I live in terror of his retirment.
