Been a while since I have been on the market and it seems like everyone is shaving these days. Is pubic hair a big turn off? Am I seriously limiting myself if I don't shave? HELP!

(23,272 posts)There are more than a few men who don't care one bit about pubic hair so don't buy into that hype. If you had the chance to jump into the sack with George Clooney would you worry about back hair??
No way.
For me, the most sexy part of anyone is their brain.
I shaved my pubes one time. Never again. I was miserable for a very, very long time while it grew out. I never had a single guy (and I've had plenty) ever refuse to jump into bed with me because of it. I've never slept with a guy who shaved their pubic hair either so I have no opinion on if they do it. Honestly, I think it would look too prepubescent for me.

(6,286 posts)At least not for most people. Do what makes you happy, it's your body and you want to feel good about yourself whichever way you roll.

(21,020 posts)is once you're menopausal, often times that pesky pubic hair falls out all by itself and you won't have to deal with it.
The bad side of it...it hasn't really fallen out or stopped growing...it only took a detour and started growing out your chin and upper lip.

(66,462 posts)A lot of the younger people these days are shaving their pubic regions. It's an aesthetic decision, driven by popular tastes and perceptions.
It's really not good for you, though. Whether you shave or wax, you are creating tiny micro-abrasions or other traumatic injuries to the skin down there. This leaves you vulnerable to all sorts of skin infections, usually strep or staph in nature. So trim and keep it neat if you like, but don't shave or wax.
Personal note: pubic hair is not an issue with me in terms of what is sexy, and what is not. Sexy is intelligence, confidence, charm and other intangible qualities.

(20,176 posts)No, not everybody...it's largely an age-related phenomena with a line-of-demarcation somewhere around 40 or 45.
If you're under 40 or looking to date someone under 40, it's pretty well expected...minimally that one trim. That said, there is significant exception on both sides of that line...people older who expect crotch-maintenance (much more common among the highly educated, sophisticates and people in urban areas.) and people younger who prefer hairy genitals (though this is uncommon enough to be considered a fetish or subculture. There are entire scene-boards dedicated to the subject on FetLife.)
Ultimately:
1.) It's your body, do what makes you happy. Anybody who really likes you will accept your choices regarding your body. For some people, those choices and differences can even be a turn-on.
2.) If you have a L/T lover, you might want to take their thoughts into consideration. People that maintain their crotch with their partner's preferences in mind tend to receive more oral sex.
3.) I've never known anybody to go home with someone, ready to do the deed and go "Nope. I don't want to have sex with you anymore now that I know you maintain your genital-hair in a way I do not prefer." This does not happen.

(32,094 posts)The same goes for men and chest hair. I really don't understand this need to look like prepubescent children.

(2,299 posts)But I think a lot of them use nair or something like it, or go to the salon to do it. I think pubic hair is only supposed to be as long as a grain of rice on both men and women, and it's easier to just get rid of it all together. Me? I shave sometimes. It does have advantages.

Threading has long been popular in many Arab countries,[3] and was well known from Indian and Persian culture. The Arabic word for threading is 'Khite'; in Egypt it is also called 'Fatlah'.[4]
Threading the entire face is widely practiced amongst Iranians, but it was originally only done when a woman was getting married or for special occasions. In ancient Persia, threading was a sign that a girl had reached adulthood and become a woman.

(10,624 posts)I'm just now trying to figure out how to get back *in* the market, but that's a story for another day. I'm 45 years old, so maybe I'm a little old fashioned, but I'm not all that fond of this:
But then again, this is kind of a turnoff too:

(16,245 posts)I think the current trend is kind of weird in my opinion, but I think people ultimately need to do what they want to do. I don't want to be with someone that would demand I do this.

(3,214 posts)In the end it is what I want and what I am comfortable with. However, I do like the illustration with Emma Watson and, out of consideration, I may trim a bit. You don't have company over without cleaning up the house a little, right? so maybe that is what I'll do but whatever I end up with, I'll have some fun!!!!
I really appreciate everyone's input.
